Are 1.9D Synergie and Peugeot 405 Starter Motors the same?

Post by kenbw2 »

My starter motor is showing signs of being on its way out and I can harvest one from a spares repairs Peugeot 405. They're both the XUD engine so I'd assume they're one and the same

Can anyone confirm one way or the other?

All of the diesel ones seem interchangeable, though some of the older ones are longer in the body.

Is that extra length something that can cause a problem, or is the space sufficient for both?

As far as I can see from fitting starters, practically all the 1.9 and 2litre HDI starters are interchangeable. I know that a starter from a 405 1.9 diesel will fit the 2.0l 16 valve HDI. 1.4 & 1.6 HDI engines have the starter fitted to the back of the engine. They probably can interchange I.e between 1.4 & 1.6.

I think the main difference is that the early ones didn't have the reduction gearing but they will all work.
