Height corrector problem?

Unread post by noxati11 »

Hi, recently when I step on brake pedal, back of the car slip down or above depending on how actual situation. It also happens when suspension lower or higher with foot on brake pedal. Here is video for better understanding. I raised car to higher position, then I stepped on the brake pedal and then released back to lower position. Front goes without problem, but back of car stick on higher position. When I release the pedal, back slip hard down. :|

I'm not sure I'm fully understanding the process that creates your problem but I had a xantia that would raise it's rear as I came to a stop under braking. It turned out to be a stuck rear height corrector mechanism which was cured by lubrication of the moving parts.

Shortly problem is created by stepping on brake pedal. If brake pedal is pressed, the back suspension not react on lowering or rising. Even when riding (bumps).

I had also had a CX that would do that; Hold the brake pedal, change the height and the rear would not move until brake pedal released - then it would either shoot up or drop down suddenly. Perhaps it's a quirk of the pressure differences through the brake block as there was nothing wrong with the car.

Ever wonder why the handbrake was on the front? Even a well sorted xantia will hold the rear up on the brakes.

i would check and replace the center rear sphere as although it is called an anti sink sphere, it in fact holds a reserve pressure for the rear brakes

It´s an feature related to rear axle geometry. Rear suspension simply can´t move if brake is pressed, because wheelbase changes during suspension movement. Wheelbase cannot change when wheels are locked with brake. Think about it and it´s pretty obvious. ;)

I used to do this regularly when I did citroebics. Hold the car on the brake and lower the suspension from high to low. Makes sure those rear brakes get some weight on them and a workout. Never had issues with rear calipers seizing on any Xantia I owned long-term doing this once a week.

The reason the hand brake is on the front is very simple; as the suspension moves up and down the wheel base changes its length. While the front suspension merely moves up and down (having a vertical travel) the rear suspension also moves backwards and forwards (as it is a trailing arm system). If the handbrakes worked on the rear wheels, parking nose close to things could cause damage if the suspension went down over time.

It's not a bug, it's a feature ;)

As other have said this is normal. If you're stationary and apply the foot brake hard the rear suspension cannot move up or down because doing so would change the wheel base due to the trailing arms. Try it with the hand brake (which works on the front wheels) applied instead of the foot brake and it will move freely.
