Whining noise

Post by ivesy123 »

It's not the power steering but when the car is started and is idling you can hear it and also when driving. Does anyone have any ideas?

Alternator, timing belt tensioner or crank pulley.

thanks, from the noise that it's making the alternator and the timing belt tensioner can be ruled out but not sure about the crank pulley?

Looking at the noises associated with any of the above they don't seem to be like the noise I'm getting. I know this sounds a bit stupid but in the car it's nearly like the sound an old fashioned milk float would make. Though over the last few months it is getting louder. Outside the car the noise is noticeable when it's ticking over.

I tend to listen to noises rather than look....

Ha ha I meant looking on the internet for noises associated with this noise. The last I heard the garage think it maybe the alternator but I've had no problems with any of the electrics. Just a bit upset three well known garage chains all thought it was the same problem when it wasn't!

Noisy bearing in an alternator won't make any difference to the electrics. It's should be easy to pin the noise down - get a long stick, place it on each of the items on the end of the engine in turn and stick your ear on the other end. When you find the one that is making the noise, it will be obviously loud on the stick. Mind you if it's making that much noise, it ought to be pretty easy to figure it out - but if 3 garages have so far failed, then maybe not....

what is the recommended adhesive for this Richard, blue tack, double sided tape or even chemical metal :yikes:   :-D  :rofl2: :rofl2:  ,

the best way to check a noise suspected in the aux belt run, is drop the belt off and feel/spin all the pulleys,

I prefer contact adhesive, that way you can be sure it won't come off :-D

preferable to impact adhesive, less painful anyway than a whack in the ear with a short sharp stick

yeah that 'joke' keeps coming up around the forums. The latest is I now have a new p/s pump and new fluid. But the noise is still there. Kwik fit's advice was wait until it goes then we'll know what it is........
