Tools and parts for Citroens ? your best and basic ones

As it says really, basically the strip down of the spares cars is doing its job and teaching me how bloody dreadful my tool set is

What are your best "I would not be without" tools
Basics ? what are the basics you would not be without ?

Parts and bits ?.....seals/O-rings/pipes/fluids/repair kits/etc.....so, apart from the spares from the donor cars, what will I always need "on-stock" and where is the best source for such items.

On the list already is a set of very small pipe spanners....but where from ?

Most of you know what I am embarked on, so I welcome all the help I can get.....cheers

Have a Dremmel, grinder, drills, Vice, Air-Hammer gun, large compressor etc....equipment wise I'm sorted quite well, now with ramps plus 4 High aXl stands I am not wanting...

Its hand tools and parts....I'm really starting from scratch on that side.

Decent 1/2" drive socket set. Decent smaller socket set. Good set of screwdrivers and a good ratchet screwdriver with interchangeable bits. A good set of ratchet spanners, preferably ones with a bendy joint on the ring end. You'd be as well to make one of Xac's sphere removal tools, a good set of cold chisels and a hammer or two.

If you have a good compressor then make as much as the above air-powered

A gallon of LHM wouldn't go amiss - easily gettable for about £30 delivery off eBay.

A good impact driver/gun + sockets

I've also got a couple of boxes of various sized nuts, bolts, fasteners and self tappers.

Apart from engine oil for top - ups and a filter or two, there's not a lot else I'd imagine you'd need. With Ebay and Google, there's not much you can't find and have delivered in a day or two. Seems silly these days to keep a load of stuff you might never ever need in stock.

Can you recommend on the the ratchet spanner sizes that get most used ?
Seals/O-rings etc...sizes used on the Xantia...best place/get a box or singles ?
What about hose clips ?....had using "screw-ups"...best source for Citroen ones ?

I ask a lot....maybe let me know when your next away and I should just rob your workshop

Whichever size you haven't got to hand, that's the one you will most definitely need. I seem to remember 8,10,12,13mm on a Xantia though.

Dealer will get you the seals, or GSF. They're very cheap. I bought double what I needed when I put new spheres on my Activa and still have all the 10 I didn't use somewhere.

I can't recall using any Citroen specific tools on any of my Xantias. There must be some (like the SEEM gauge for the V6 timing belt) but I'd imagine a gent with your ability can make do with whatever tools you have around.

I'd add a good quality gear puller (useful for bearings, btake discs etc), a set of Torx keys / bits, as big a vice as you can get (doubles as a press for wishbone bushes and the like), a blowlamp with a narrow flame, and Mole grips (actually, I much prefer Irwin, or even the cheap Chinese ones).

Oh - and cable ties, assorted. Good for all sorts of temporary and permanent things. I usually have a few with me wherever I am!

If I bought my hand tools again I'd start with a bluepoint set like this or the separate 1/4 and 3/8 sets. I'd get a metric tap and die set as well then just buy tools as needed for each job until I had a fair collection.

If I was feeling impatient and wanted to invest quickly I'd probably go for something like the Teng Mega Master kit, it's prity good but still doesn't have everything. No flaring tool for example.

I'd also consider forgetting hand tools and getting a lathe and mill to make my own, thats probably silly though.

I would add Torx bits going up past T50, as there are several things that use larger Torx bolts. T55 comes to mind, but I cannot remember what used it.

i wouldnt pay more in fact even that muck whooooops much for draper tools, i have a set of ratchet combi spanners i bought from Lidl a few year back, cant remember what i payed but they were certainly reasonable at the time, and they are very good
