206 1.4 SW Head gasket change, exhaust and crankshaft hiccup

Unread post by mpdevice »

Hi

Trying to dodge the rain and drizzle I started taking my 206 apart today. Wonder if you can give me any advice. SO far made good progress in the destructive phase of the job however I have two questions you may be able to answer.

I got most everything removed apart from the exhaust (manifold). I got all the nuts removed, most came out with the studs.

As you can see the catalytic converter hangs on the manifold and as there are studs still in the head the manifold won't simply drop. Also I can't pull the arrangement forward.
I have tried to remove the nuts separating the manifold from the converter but they are inaccessible and rotten beyond shape.
I could undo the down pipe blow the engine but wanted to avoid that as I don't have pit or any such comfort as a lift. Andy idea how to do it better?

Also I am not sure how to lock the crankshaft on this car, I think it is done with a bolt into the flywheel. The hole (if it exists) must be covered by the oil filter which is unconventionally housed in some kind of bottle arrangement (top removed in the picture). Does anybody know how it comes off so I can lock the flywheel? It's too grimy to see what I'm doing.
There is a dual pipe arrangement going to the block (green arrow) where the original oil filter would have been.

The Cam shaft pulley wheel, too has an elongated hole, I don't think it will fit the 9mm bolt that was mentioned elsewhere, guess it needs something smaller.
Everything is a bit odd on this car and there must be many variants.

Anyway, thanks for your help, I hope the get it back on the road soon assuming the head is still serviceable.

Mayo everywhere....

Regards

The timing hole is to the right and slightly above of the red arrow in the second pic, its quite small (about 4 or 6mm) and well recessed. You may need a bent bolt or the proper tool with that filter design however. The proper tool is just an L shaped piece of rod

Later (from 2000) had that paper arrangement of filter simply so the mani-cat could fit.

Regarding that, they are a pig when they seize to the manifold. Is that the only stud left that is visible ? Can you not lock two nuts together and remove it ? , then you won't need to worry about clearance as such.
Andy.

Thanks spider,

I have a timing belt kit from Draper that has an L-shaped bolt I think. Let me see if I can do this, problem is I can;t see the hole at all right now.

I will also try the two-nut trick, I think there are two studs, if one is underneath the manifold pipes (I think it is) that's a pain.

Thanks for your help, will have another go tomorrow. May remove top engine mount and try to rock the engine. Maybe manifold will come off this way.

Good night

If you can take a pic of the 'side' between the oil filter and the bellhousing / crankcase I can point out the timing hole.

There's usually a small metal cover with a bolt nearby. Its not under this its nearby it.

I found this here which wouldindicate that it is completely covered by the oil filter bottle.

And the tool they use is not L shaped, it's a stepped bolt.
