Xantia fuel smell

Post by Chetiya Dias »

Hi. I'm getting the petrol smell sometimes when driving. I feel the smell is coming from the A/C vents when its on. When I top up the tank also I get the smell. On & off only get the smell while driving and not always. Checked the tank & the fuel line for any leaks but couldn't find. Anyone experienced this issue.

Had this before , one of fuel hose line clips intermittently gushed fuel on the engine , can't be more specific about the location was a Xantia 2.0i . On & off , unnoticeable on occasions but eventually spotted . The hose clip replacement sorted . Wouldn't have thought it uncommon to smell whilst topping up .

Check it out. Fuel leaks can be pretty nasty. Don't ask me how I know this.

You've probably got a leak on the HP fuel line where it meets a connection on top of the engine, usually located on the lefthand side above the cam covers & before the line runs down to the pressure regulator. I've fixed this on a few petrol Xantias. If the fuel line is split, there is usually enough to cut it back. Remove both the existing OE clips & fit band type Jubilee clips, the type used on aircraft as they clamp around the whole fuel line. Easy job if you know what to do.

If its not that it could be a loose sparkplug, a leaking injector or a leaking injector seal. :rofl2:

The pipe clips you are using are the wrong type as they pinch the fuelline hose & can cause it to leak. You need the type that has a band that goes completely around the pipe. :rofl2:
I'd also treat that braided hose with a bit of caution. Is it petrol proof? It also looks too big in diameter to fit onto the unions tightly. Dont forget, the fuel is under considerable pressure so all the joints need to be nice & close fitting.

As you stated that you get a fuel smell when you fill up the tank, I'd suggest looking at the screwed locking ring & gasket that hold the fuel pump into the tank. I have seen these fitted with the gasket floating in the tank or the locking ring fitted so its cross threaded.

If the smell is worse when you're running AC, as this is recirculated, filtered air in the car, the source of your leak maybe from this tank fitting. Worth a close inspection.
