xantia rattle

Hi I am looking at a 96 turbo diesel xantia with new mot but there is a rattle from the front end when driving over rough road, any ideas?

Hi Chris -
A new MOT on any s/h car is no guarantee against severe problems - as it's all down to the MOT engineer who tested the car.
There are many possibilities for this front end rattle.
Most likely a worn droplink - easy & cheap to replace.
Next most likelyhood is the lower swivel balljoint - not too bad either to replace.
Then you have the front control arm bushings - rather fiddly to replace.
Lastly it could be the swaybar bushings - no fun.
Problems with the McPherson suspension cylinder upper fixings are rare on Xantia's - but have been reported - and then it could be a severe corrosion problem.

I have a low speed, rough surface rattle that I have traced to the front height control valve. There is some play "somewhere" in it's linkage. When the weather is better, I will remove it to have a look. Am saving corks to plug the hydraulic connections!
