Hi all first post. I've bought a 2005 C4 1.4. Happy with it but the gears have quite a bit of play in them, waggle them about quite a bit and also it can be a pain to select 5th gear and reverse.
anybody got any advice on what it could be ?
Thanks in advance
Tough to put gears in 5th and reverse and a lot of play

Welcome, John
It's probably wear in one of the cables, it might just need crimping up a bit, otherwise replacement. If you can post up the last 8 digits of the VIN we can look up a part number and price for the cable.

Hi mate, thanks a lot for replying ! It's 223841. Some mentioned links or bushes? I'll do the basics or follow a guide everything else goes the garage is it fairly easy to change or should it be a garage job?
Sorry I know I sound like a complete newbie , well I am To be fair. When you say uncrimped you mean like unattached? When fitting the new cables I'm assuming the whole exhaust system needs to be dropped?
we bought the car as a 2nd so bought it cheap! The fusebox has already failed but bypassed with a fused wire. These are the only two real issues and ill be looking soon how to replace the fusebox or for advice.
Thanks again

John, need 8 digits from the VIN.... No idea about changing them - the Haynes for the 307 suggests it can be done without removing the exhaust, I imagine the C4 will be similar. Re the crimping, you might find if you look at the end of cables in the engine bay you will find that the end of one of them has come loose, and you might be able to tighten it up with a pair of pliers of similar to stop if floating about.

Check this thread for an indication of the problem and fix.
Your cables may not be the same but will be similar.
