Rear brake lights staying on

Post by Welshy_Pete »

My rear brake lights on my other 306 hdi are staying on when the ignition turned to the turn before starting. Also when the car started the lights also stay on the rear window light and 2 back lights stay on also.

There a click from the starter motor also as well.

I agree.

Its a bit of a pig to do the switch though. BOL recommends removing dashboard ( ! ) although you can if you whip the instrument panel out and struggle a bit do it without from what I recall.

The 306 stop light switch is a bit like the heater matrix,Peugeot started with it and built a car round it.!!! What a stupid location.
I`ve replaced many in my time, tried all sorts of ideas.
The best way is to remove the steering cowling, remove the four nuts holding the steering column and let it drop down. You will then be able to get your hand into the "box section" where the switch is.Its just a "pull and push" fitting so its best to remove and refit the plug when its out.
If you have skinny hands and long fingers it helps.

I fixed the problem and used a long nose pliers and moved the switch forward. So now the brake lights work fine also the clicking in the engine bay stopped now.

I wouldn't like to change the switch one hell of a job just looking at it.

i think if memory serves its the nylon collar the switch sits in that fails

Had that happen on a 406, the switch would gradually 'wiggle' itself out of the collar. From memory the collar you have to buy a bag of 4 or 5 of them but they were not much.

Saw a 206 once that one sidelight (the right hand one) would come on when the brakes were applied. I think it ended up having a new BSi in the end to 'fix' it under warranty. Hmm.

i have seen once both front side lights coming on when the brakes were applied, turned out to be the owner had fitted a stop tail bulb the wrong way round

Just whilst folk are following this, if this becomes a problem (for you or anyone else) - don't believe Haynes Manual, you DO NOT need to remove the dashboard. (Just done the switch on my 306). If you remove the steering column shrouds and lower the column by undoing the support bolts, there is a cut-away slot you can get your hand through to both remove and replace the switch. Takes less than an hour all in.

The switches have a ribbed end which pushes through a nylon washer to lock it in place. The way of adjusting is exactly as you did i.e. push switch as far forward as you can with pedal down then push it back through the nylon washer click at a time until just touching pedal then all is fine. (take it slow, if you push one click too far, lights stay on and you have to go back through the hole to push switch forward and start again. (not a problem but hole is so tight you are likely to graze your wrists a bit each time) :(

Switches are under a fiver from Eurocar parts but do not include the nylon washer, that is a separate part. Never known the washer break but seen plenty of switches fail.
