Hi...should the lift pump on a 51 plate 2.0hdi xsara picasso run all the time the engine is running,,,,regards...barry

Yes (as long as it's a Bosch injection system).

why does ours only run for around 5 seconds .......a new lift pump has been fitted ...do we have to do something with the ecu...regards...barry

Is the engine management light on? It maybe that there is a problem with the fuel pressure regulator which is thinking there is a leak so is shutting the pump / engine down.

If you're saying it's only running for 5 seconds when the ignition is switched on, this is normal as it'll be pressurising the system. It'll be running all the time that the car is running but you probably won't be able to hear it.

Are you having problems with the car or is this more of a general interest question?

Hi David....

thanks for the reply.....changed the lift pump,, as the old one had failed....now the car starts but only runs for 30/40 seconds then dies....any advise would be gratfully received....regards...barry
