Make sure its been cambelted. See what it drives like, dual mass flywheel/clutch and turbo issues spring to mind with that sort of mileage.

Advice, don't.........2.0 are much better and the engine is bomb proof.

The 1.6 is VERY underpowered for the size, low down power is horrid and you have to gut it to move off the line. 1500/1800 rpm to avoid shudder on older clutches
It is a known weak engine/clutch/flywheel due I think to the need to gut it....
It is oil sensitive, amazing how many drop their turbos.....2nd/3rd hand its a lottery or budget $$$ for the sump off and a good clean out....without it ...it is ticking.

Just my experience (only had it a short time) but I was disappointed..

I'm on my second c5 1.6hdi.
I have found them not underpowered, depends how week they have been looked after.
I do agree with the clutch etc being checked as they cost a few quid to replace, my last c5 design was a enice and pleasent drive that's why I upgraded to the x7 type.

You hear alot of stories about the turbo going, but this is down to maintenance issuse.
As servicing should be done at half the millaging Citroen recomend because of the sump design and the filters becoming blocked with oil thicker oil.

Some people have been stung buying one and some haven't, I haven't as brought both cars from the same local garage.

They are nice engines, some people use them for towing caravans etc so they cant be that under powered.

Put 600Kg in the boot and try and get up a hill from a standing start, then try it in a 2lt and tell me if the 1.6ltr car is underpowered.

Its all subjective except for the Oil history...as said budget for that work in the cost of the car

As regarding the 600kg in the boot, what type of car we talk saloon or estate, also I'm not doubting the fact that you may struggle with it I was just pointing out that some people tow caravans with such a car.

Its down to preference, I would go and get another 1.6hdi anyday, where as some who has been stung may not.

I think if you want to say a car is, or isn't underpowered, you really need to drive different powered cars to make a comparison. If owners have driven 1.6 and 2.0 L powered C5's, then fair comment but you do need something to compare surely. 8-[

I've had a 2.2 136 and a 2.0 138 and didn't really notice much difference and have never driven a 1.6 hdi anything. However I wouldn't think the 1.6 would be underpowered with its 110bhp it has the same power as most of the 2.0. I also think that I couldn't possibly comment on one power wise until I try one. I would be wary of one due to the reputation for eating turbos, but if one was cheap enough I would buy one.

One more thing to check: make sure that the dual zone air conditioning is working on both sides (left and right).
Broken heater flap is common and repair is not cheap  The broken side blows cold air.

I agree that the 110hp it provides is good, so top speed and cruse is fine but it is uncomfortable getting there, in fact it is the engines only real benefit....60mpg and low tax

More of a problem with the Mk1's I think....still needs check however I agree.

The broken heater flaps on the dual zone aircon is an issue with mk1 and mk2 (facelift) versions.

Generally, if you can do the work yourself it's not that expensive but a little involved and time consuming with dash out and aircon regas needed.
