Xantia - LHM Leak, Located now got to repair

Post by gadgetgricey »

Well just after spending £££'s on welding and a new CAT to get it through its MOT, the Xantia has decided to disgrace itself with an LHM Leak.

Its difficult to tell at the moment due to the rain, but I think its from something to do with the Power Steering. Might just be me, but seemed to trigger the light when using full lock.

Any known weaknesses on the pipes/connections to check that would be your first point of call.

Thanks again

On mine I got nearly a full turn on the larger of the two unions that enter the pinion gear.Could be worth a try.

As mentioned above most probably it is the steering rack pinion valve leaking.
It can be fixed with pinion valve repair kit which means replacing the seals.

Here is a link to start with: Xantia LHM leak near front height corrector

Tip: in FCF you'll find useful threads with "pinion valve repair kit" search.

Re: Xantia - LHM Leak Located (Now just got to fix)

Well a month and a half on, and I finally get some time to have a look and try and source the leak.

Firstly filled the reservoir up with LHM, and proceeded to spill a load just to make sourcing the leak even harder, or so I thought.

Wheel off, inner wheel arch liner off, and car started. Leak right in front of me where it "curves" , spraying right out the corner.

Anyone got any advice on the best way to repair/replace the affected pipe. (Bearing in mind, total novice at the majority of this, but willing to have a go)

Not sure if its clear from pics as closeup, but its n/s front directly above drive shaft.

Thanks again

That's almost certainly the PAS feed pipe - a well known weak point, and a complete PITA to repair. First it runs in one piece from the pump to the PAS pinion valve, via the 'wrong' side of the car and second it's got a rubber section in it to damp out the pulsations from the pump - so it cannot be replaced with just metal pipe. Poster on here was advertising the rubber section, but you still need to get the metal bits and fit it - http://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/v ... =7&t=49073" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

To be honest I thought it was that, had e-mailed the poster re the repair section a while ago, but not had a response.
I do however have a breaker car, that the pipe looks in good order (well that bit is anyway, so hopefully the rest is OK)

Done a search and found a thread that Paul wrote regarding swapping the one on his Mum's HDI, but does not go into any detail regarding fitting other than "wriggling it in"

Going to try and have another more detailed look tomorrow, but are you aware if anything else has to be removed. Rad etc, to get the one pipe out and then refitted...

Thanks again

what pipe do you need ?....welcome to it if I do not need it (there is ZERO corrosion on my car so not much will be kept) rather than spend hours getting yours out.

Es9 steering pipes are not compatible with anything else.

excuse me butting in....but what the heck is that twisted bit of wire there for ?? that is a good way of destroying a gator very quickly. Can you not get a clamp that will not cut thru the rubber ?
