C5 2008- audio system replacement.

Post by bigblackfalco »

Has anyone replaced their radio/cd unit for something else?
If so what was it and was it a straight/easy swap?
Mine is the type with the single slot loading CD on. (No Nav unit!)
Do these units have Bluetooth integration on them as standard?

My current unit needs to go in the bin .. can not put up with the terrible sound quality much longer!
Cheers.

Yes I have. I´ve got and Kenwood unit BT92SD. You need stalk adapter and steering wheel controller adapter too, for example InCarTec makes them.

If you have also standard speakers, I think they´re the biggest problem when sound quality is considered. Change speakers, use damping material on the doors, install amplifier, and you get much better sound quality.

Bluetooth came as standard in 2010, I think. It´s possible to add bluetooth to standard main unit with external box, or you can change RD4 to RD45 with internal bluetooth and usb-support.

Here´s some images of my project: http://www.saunalahti.fi/jepujep/Autohifit/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I changed the front door speakers for some JBL's I had left over from another car.
It improved the general sound quality but also showed up the very poor OE Radio/CD unit.
I found that unit clips really badly when turned up.
Did the set up you used work ok with the parking sensors??
Thanks.

I changed all the speakers including the dash ones for Pioneer ones specific to the car and found they made quite a difference, I did the fronts first then a few weeks later the rears which made a further improvement.

@Xantippa sorry but that to me does not really complement the car very well, the looks alone would drive me nuts.

Agree with DickieG, change the speakers (Kenwoods in mine)

I use a Blueetooth "button" type device, easy fit via line in in glove box, streams music and calls, has an SD card and USB port..

Does that Bluetooth device tap into the steering wheel controls?

@Stickyfinger Yeah I know that aftermarket main unit looks bad in the dash. And it´s also very hard to read that display in the summer. :( That´s why I recommend using RD45 with external amplifier, and maybe some DSP-unit (I´d use MiniDSP) if you want to reach best sound quality. But it´s much more complicated then, and you have to use speaker-level to line-level transformer and so on... If you mean my tweeter-installation, it´s been updated a bit, and looks much better now. Also the sub is now in the center of the sparewheel, so it´s not at all visible in the boot. ;)

@bigblackfalco Parking sensors work just fine, I "removed" stock radio with Lexia, and now parking sensor sound comes from the beeper in the dash. So don´t buy adaptor lead with beeper, you don´t need it. Changing just speakers isn´t enough, you really have to remove that cup behind doorspeakers and use damping material + add some power with external amplifier. That way bass is much better. In my car rearview mirror starts to vibrate with music even without subwoofer... My amp is 6-channel JL Audio xd600/6, which fits nicely under front seat.

:)...no

But I have it on the dash behind the washer stalk, the phone on a magnet to the dash so I just use voice control on the phone. I search music that way as well.
I just accept that if I am on the radio I have to switch to Aux2 to listen to calls or stream music.
The Micro SD card is good for a big mix (not worth trying to search it, just shuffle) and my 120gig hard drive music player streams as well via the USB port on it if I can be bothered (higher quality recordings than on the phone). It does get messy with USBs plugged in and its a shame it does not Auto Connect when switched on.

I have no use for built in SatNavs except the systems normally offer better music/phone/auto answer controls. At some point a China RD45 may be attempted....

I'm thinking just a decent head unit/amp and decent speakers. That should be enough.
I def don't want a sub bass unit in my boot. Don't even want to plumb in a separate amp :(
It'd be nice to have something that is identical in size to the OE unit.
I'd like something that has bluetooth and ability to work seamlessly with an iPhone/ipod. Not even bothered about CD's anymore.
Good to know that the parking sensors can be changed via Lexia :)

You don´t get any more power if you just change head unit. After market speakers have lower sensitivity than original ones, and they just like to have more power. Isotec Isoamp-4 or something similar could be just right thing for you. It gives a tad more power, and installation is plug- and play. Buy RD45 and isoamp and you are pretty much there. I'd happily accept anything that's a quality 4x50w output. I quite like my ears working thanks ;)
