Citroen C5 2.0HDI VTR 04 reg Fuel Gauge Fault

Post by JIMMY8008 »

Hello

My trusty old C5 has developed another although a little strange fault!!!

Two days ago the needle on fuel gauge was working ok, I needed fuel the light came on and miles to fill up on computer looked ok, I put 20 litres of fuel in which to the gauge just over a quarter full all usual. When I got in the car last night on start up the gauge had increased to read just over half full and miles to fill up has also increased on the computer, I have completed around 50 miles and the gauge and readings have not altered!

Is it likely the gauge in the sender unit in the tank is stuck? car still runs ok.

Any ideas how to cure this problem?

Many thanks
James

First C5 was always quite accurate but when I bought the current one it was anything but.
I always brim the tank and run it until the light comes on in the knowledge that I can drive another ± 60 miles.
After a couple of fillups it corrected itself and has been fine on all but two occasions.
The first was a Citroen rally.
Had driven first to Ware then to Kettering and the gauge was showing only ¼ tank when there should have been enough to get me home easily.

Started up after the rally with the intention of going to the nearest fuel station and it settled at over half, got me home and lasted another four days.

Last week for no apparent reason it showed ¼ for a couple of days then went back up to half.
Filled up when it showed empty and put the usual 62 ish litres in.

So yours could be a temporary bit of madness, quite common on our Gallic transport.
I reckon that filling it to the brim helps but have no proof. At least it saves me visiting the fuel station very often - once a month on average :)

Dirt in the LP pump/sender in the tank ? ....easy to have a look. Just make sure you get the seal on and then really tighten it down (a little smear of oil on the seal helps a lot)

Try disconnecting the battery - cured mine.

BSI reset (ONLY by following this method) http://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/v ... 19&t=43609 can cure many faults :), well clear the bleeping/lying ones anyway :)
