C5 X7 2.0 hdi 160 - no oil pressure. Help!

Unread post by Dublin Tony »

Hopped into the car today and went to start her up. Engine barely turned over and made a funny howling sound. Checked the terminals - all fine. Wipers etc seemed to have plenty of go, but thought "flat battery".
Got a jump start. After a couple of seconds, got a warning message up on the display - Warning : Oil pressure. The engine did sound a bit rattly or at least more rattly than usual, so I turned her off quick!
I think I've got no oil pressure. What could be causing this? The car has plenty of oil and is well shy of her next service.
I was only telling to my wife today how much I loved the car and how it's the nicest one I've ever owned. Friday the 13th I suppose :-({|=

Anyone heard of this kind of thing before?

As a first input, I'll post the method of checking the oil pressure, as described in the Service Documentation:

I seem to have a dim recollection of some one else having oil pump failure on this engine - I think the howling noise is probably the give away.... #-o

There was a Citroen recall on the 2.0l engine for oil pump problems. Don't know about your car but worth checking. If Citroen haven't already sorted it for a previous owner, then possibly you should have been contacted.

Sometimes the change doesn't work.

Was there not a test case that concluded that if the customer had registered the change of ownership with the company directly (eg not just a dealer) that the company was liable.
As the need to contact was not a safety issue they were not obliged (or allowed ?) to use the DVLA lists of ownership

if I recall correctly

Looks like a knackered oil pump. The cog that drives the pump is no longer attached to the shaft it's mounted on. Bummer. I'm going to replace it and hopefully that will sort her out.

Bummer as you say... seems to be 2 types depending on exactly which engine - one is cheap (£50 or so); the other isn't (£250 or so). Hope yours is the cheaper one! If it only ran for a couple of seconds at idle, I would expect it to be OK.

Well, €500 later, she's back on the road. The mechanic went all CSI on the knackered oil pump and here's what he reckons:
One of the impeller vanes became embedded in the side of the pump housing. This could be due to a flaw in the housing, or the vane just broke off the rotor. This seized the pump which made it very hard for the starter to turn the engine over (flat battery wasn't flat). When I put jump leads on the car, the extra current to the starter forced the seized pump to turn over and the drive cog sheared off the oil pump. The engine then started, but without an oil pump.
All told, €212 for the new pump and a new oil filter and €300 labour and oil. Could have been a lot worse!
I got the pump from the main dealer/importer in Dublin and I asked him if he had sold many oil pumps. He told me 'not for the 2 litre'. It was the first one he can remember! It was there for collection the next day.
As an aside, I was quoted €340 for the pump Ex.VAT from a Peugeot garage in Carlow (Boland's). They also said it would take 2-3 days to get here. The Lesson? SHOP AROUND!
