indicator stalk on 1998 series 2 Xantia

Post by DublinChris »

Ok so while other things are working well I have an issue with the indicator stalk in that when I push it up to make a right turn sometimes it does not make contact and indicator does not come on - also sometimes when on it will drop out. This is proving an issue for our NCT (MOT) people. I don't have a problem with it because a light tap upwards and it stays on - it doesn't do it all the time but the tester picked up on it and is looking for a repair. Question is - is there a quick fix that does not involve trying to source and fit new part? would the parts still be available? Also they indicated on visual inspection that the rear offside brake line is showing signs of advanced corrosion. This seems to be a spring like pipe. Is this a common issue with a car of this age - 1998? I am told it can be a time consuming job to replace.

The following post probably will help. What happens is that the grease ages, and the copper tarnishes, so you then have a contact issue. I have had this happen, stripped, cleaned and polished the bits, and now I have a fully functional, reliable indicator stalk;

I bet that, when the indicator glitches you get a much more rapid 'ticking'. This is a known fault, and cleaning the indicator worked for me (and others).

On my S1, cleaning it up gave me another year of use, then it played up again, so gave up & fitted new switch

Mine went too. Very easy to replace, at least on S2 cars. New one' s been working several years now. Did not like the fizzy sound!

Not an uncommon problem, 306's used to have this a fair bit as well, not surprising as its the same switch really.
