Re: Tax disc changes
Do it on-line
No need to display a disk---(you do not get one anyway)
If you sell, you fill out the form on-line and the remaining FULL MONTHS are refunded by DVLA cheque (same same with SORN)

Re: Tax disc changes
All checked by ANPR big brother eyes....lots of static ones now, a letter will come to many as a surprise.superloopy wrote:And if i do it over 12months, then what?
sell it after 1 month 1 day, you get 10 back.
Do it monthly and as long as they get payed you get tax.....I see a NIGHTMARE with this and the police will be all over older cars as the DVLA database is faster than the insurance companies...so when those direct debits fail because Sky-Sports and the IPhone has cleared the account that month.

Re: Tax disc changes
No "part moth" refunds, it expires at moths end. The remaining days stays with the car reportedly (this needs checking) until it runs out at moths end.....so yeh, just cancel DDbt and Fill in the OnLine new keeper details....they do the rest.

Re: Tax disc changes
Looking on the Dot,Gov website, it does state that any RFL cannot be passed on to the next owner & its only the current listed owner that has the RFL.
Interesting conundrum though is you can buy RFL for somebody else's car providing you have a valid insurance for that car & access to the number listed on the V5C.
Seems like this lot at DVLA don't know their RSole from their elbow.

Re: Tax disc changes
Yes, I noticed that when all these new shenanigans appeared over RFL changes occurred last October.
Typical of this bunch of Westminster inspired robbers at DVLA, they've got another ingenious way to take more money off the poor motoring public, even if you try to pay monthly. "Soak the poor, they never complain & there's more of them."
And dont get me started on Dart Charge & the farcical Dartford Crossing.

Re: Tax disc changes
Interesting questions as I noted when I went to pay they had various options including monthly DD. IIRC (I can't find the details now) monthly payments attract a surcharge which, presumably, is spread over the period (6/12months) so where does that leave a claim for a refund then? ie, is the surcharge discounted for each unused month or do they deduct it from the refund or worse still, not issue a refund until the whole period is paid for first?

Re: Tax disc changes
I'm sure I'm gonna get abused for this view but........
Has anyone ever sold a car and got the full value of the tax, including part months, from the buyer ON TOP of what you were asking anyway. I suspect most people haven't and if you advertise it with tax then punters expect not to pay extra for it. They see it as making your car more attractive than one without tax, not more valuable.
If you don't want to leave the tax on the car then you've always been able to get a refund of full months with the new owner also paying in full months, hence a one month overlap. It's always been that way so I can't see that there's really that much dosh being taken off sellers.
Abuse away....its a free country (except where car tax is concerned

Re: Tax disc changes
just do the maths, they make/keep a little every time a car is sold/purchased in the private market. Traders cannot make a little on top by cashing in the tax either.

Re: Tax disc changes
Yes that's true but as a private seller it's never been any different, unless you managed to pursuade the buyer to reimburse you for every day that the car was still taxed for......which I think unlikely.Stickyfinger wrote:just do the maths, they make/keep a little every time a car is sold/purchased in the private market. I'm not saying the system is fair, I've complained enough about it myself in the past, just that it hasn't really changed in financial terms for private sellers/buyers. At least it's easier now cos its online.

Re: Tax disc changes
When I sold our escort a couple of weeks ago, I declared SORN and filled in the v5 and posted it away. I got a cheque for the tax refund back within one week. That was much quicker than the last time I declared SORN and claimed tax back under the old system.

Re: Tax disc changes
Agree...on-line and electronic is better.....BUT it also makes it perfectly possible to calculate the refund to the exact pro rata time of cancellation, it should and could of benefited the consumer.

Re: Tax disc changes
No argument from me on that one but I guess it was unlikely that they would change the system to benefit car owners if it meant a drop in revenue for HMG.Stickyfinger wrote:Agree...on-line and electronic is better.....BUT it also makes it perfectly possible to calculate the refund to the exact pro rata time of cancellation, it should and could of benefited the consumer.
After all, we car owners (especially DIEsel) are all evil, aren't we?

Re: Tax disc changes
How it works: As soon as you inform DVLA of a change of registered keeper by sending in the V5C, the current RFL is cancelled & a refund is issued to the previous registered keeper. You don't even need to do anything as its done automatically.
That leaves the car unlicensed & it behoves the new keeper to either get it taxed or declare SORN. If you do neither, you get a nasty letter from DVLA demanding you pay them £80 plus any back tax. Robbin' B'stards. As its all automatic you can now expect a speedy & efficient service where money to the Exchequer is concerned.
Anybody selling a car stating it is taxed is either under some sort of self-delusion or trying to hoodwink a punter. The numerous ANPR cameras that now litter the country will soon catch you for an untaxed vehicle.
So what happened to liberty? Did we ever have any anyway?

Re: Tax disc changes
I SORNed a vehicle on-line on 31 December, and received cheque for the outstanding RFL on 8th Jan - I was impressed with the speedy re-imbursement
