Citroen C5 1.6 HDi 2008 Wipers

Post by jackwetson »

Evening all :) Yesterday driving home in the pouring rain my windscreen wipers decided to stop working no matter what position the stalk was put in, and I could almost swear I smelt a burning smell (almost like a small motor working too hard). The drivers side arm you can move freely, the passenger side seems to be unable to move by hand.

I've had it plugged into my mates lexia and it's coming back with two errors.

F02F Fault: absence of communication with the windscreen wiper ECU
FECC Fault adaptation of the windscreen sensor impossible

Now to me i'd say it would more likely be a motor problem, but the first error code makes me think, is there a dedicated ECU to the wiper ECU!?

Interestingly also as soon as you turn the ignition it goes into economy mode.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Jack

There are two separate wiper motors fitted to the C5 X7, if one of yours moves freely then it might suggest that motor has gone bang. It's also worth noting there was a recall on the C5 to do with "An incorrect engine relay unit may have been fitted. This ECU could deteriorate and cause operating faults and perhaps failure of certain equipment. WIPERS / LIGHTS/ BATTERY CHARGING MAY BE AFFECTED. " VIN/Vehicle ID: VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]******67002101 to VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]******45299702 build date 01/02/2008 to 14/06/2008. Info taken from the VOSA recalls website http://www.dft.gov.uk/vosa/apps/recalls/default.asp?tx=" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

As for the economy mode - you'll be needing to either fully charge your existing battery, or - more likely - need a new battery.

Id also heard when researching X7's that wiper motors can and do fail... IIRC they arent that cheap either... a massive 251.52 each from dealer!

OR you can chance this one!

If you go for a replacement battery, there is a procedure to follow before removing the old battery and installing the new one. The Citroen Docbackup procedure merely says:

Switch off the ignition
Wait 3 minutes before disconnecting the battery
Disconnect the battery

But I know there are other more elaborate procedures recommended by some. The idea of waiting 3 minutes is (basically, and paraphrasing here) to allow the various ECUs to go into 'sleep' mode.

Thinking about this logically, if a wiper motor has gone bang, it's almost certainly taken the fuse with it, which would probably cause your Lexia faults. So check fuse F12 in the fuse compartment under the bonnet, the wiper fuse is a 30amp one.

Thats all for your tips, i'll certainly look into all the suggestions :)

It does seem very co-incidental that the recall says wipers and battery and i'm having the same issue. http://www.dft.gov.uk/vosa/apps/recalls ... =Blank&tx=" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Can anyone advise how I might determine if my car was fitted with an incorrect unit before I present this to my local dealer?

Does your car fall within the build dates / Vehicle Identification Numbers ?
I think the only sure way to find out if yours is affected and has / has not been rectified is to go along to a Citroen main dealer and get them to look it up :|

The 'economy mode' problem you're getting is nothing unusual - it's normally just a sign of a deteriorating battery or the fact that you do an awful lot of short journeys !

It does indeed! I'll give them a call in the morning and I don't do any short journeys. My drive to work is an hour each way.

The economy mode started at the exact same time as the wiper failure also
