Steering wheel options

Unread post by DublinChris »

wondering if there are any options to replace steering wheel on 1998 series 2 Xantia - Turbo diesel? My wheel is now very worn around edges. I do not use radio controls as I have replaced the original unit. With the airbag are there any after market options or is it a case of trying to find an original from a breakers?

tried a search for steering wheel on forum but no results.

My guess would be an original only... Ive a few, but unfortunally on them the Rim Trim twists freely on the metal frame on them, so useless really.

Original only I'd say as well.
It is possible to change it completely and lose the airbag but probably not a great idea for a road car.

Airbag has to stay for our mot equivalent - if it was a standard fitting originally. So looks like only the original will work. Are other people having the same problem with worn wheels? Maybe there is a cover that can go over the wheel?

Definitely a bad idea on road cars then. There are some steering wheels on ebay starting at £25.
All plastic wheels seem to wear and go loose eventually. Leather ones I haven't had do it yet but I'm sure they go eventually.

Theres good n bad. Also, An S1 wheel will only go on an S1 and S2 on an S2 only.

I wonder what people do with their wheels, My Xantia at 283k - leather rimmed didnt look too bad at all, yet Ive seen some at 150k which look dreadfull..

Seem the covering twisting at the moment is confined to S2 wheels only. Im yet to ever see an S1 wheel covering twist on the rim...

Now you've mentioned it none of my Xantias have either, the only one I changed was my L reg because a friend had a spare Leather one. I've only had S1s. I could be wrong about ebay as well, didn't realise S1 and 2 were different.

My 1998 S2 does not have a leather wheel - only the hard vinyl? outer casing - which has worn away now in quite a few places - I am at 190K miles 8-)

These are good, thin and when you take your time (Heat the wheel and the leather first, scuff clean the original) with the stitching you get a very good result.
