Can I service my starter motor?

Post by smoker »

My Xsara 52 reg 110 hdi is somewhat sluggish to turn over despite a new battery. A search seems to suggest that starter motors are often the culprit. I've succesfully striiped, cleaned and reassembled a starter before, although that was on a motorbike. Can a typical Xsara starter be serviced at home?

Thx all.

If it has a reduction gear as most seem seem to now, the problem can be that the grease has dried up, a clean and relubricate my well sort it out.

From experience.. try replacing the earth and positive leads first..They seem to degrade with age and after I had my positive lead replaced I never had another problem starting regardless of trmperature.

Couldn't agree more; they are a weak link on so many of the PSA products. Beyond that, a pitted solenoid may be restricting current flow a bit.
