Fuel Pump

Unread post by froggy »

Hi, my Father"s S1 Xantia , the fuel pump started leaking a few days ago. He took it to the local garage who told him.....he needs the fuel pump reconditioned, five hours labour...£700 plus VAT ! MY QUESTION IS... would it be wise to get a pump from a scrapyard and how easy is it to fit ? I have never done one. My father said he should scrap the car, but it is in very good condition except for the pump. many thanks in advance Terry.

It would be helpful to know what engine the car has... ;)

I'm assuming from the £700 quote that you're not talking about the in-tank fuel pump (which can be bought new for about £70) but the high pressure diesel injection pump on a diesel engine. If so which engine and which kind of pump ?

As its a series 1 Xantia it has to be one of the indirect engines. There are various pumps from Bosch or Lucas/Rotodiesel/Delphi, but in N/A and turbo versions. The important question is where is it leaking from? If the leak is from the throttle or the idle/stop spindles on the top of the pump a competent mechanic should be able to repair it without removing the pump. This is where they most commonly leak. The o rings cost only a few cent and I have done them in less than an hour. You can buy the complete top end seal kit for most pumps for under 30 euro. Some cost less than half that amount. If the leak is from the seal on the drive end of the pump then it needs to be removed. On all but the very early xud engines this means removing the timing belt. Some pumps have a sprocket that can be retained with 2 m8 bolts and have a built in puller which allows the pump to be removed without disturbing the belt. The problem with this is that it is very likely that the belt is contaminated with fuel if the drive end seal has failed.

The engine is a T.D. the leak is coming from the back of the pump ( the leak is not visable from the front,. When I go to my Fathers later, I will check on the type of pump. many thanks Terry.

Ay up!

Try an independent Citroen specialist. I had this problem on a BX17 diesel and a 2nd hand pump with recon injectors was about £150. Wherabouts are you based, Terry?

If it's a Xantia TD it will be a Bosch pump. Probably the stop solenoid if it's down the back, may or may not be armoured depending on age of the car and immobiliser status. Should be possible to get a replacement SH pump fitted for << £700, but they are likely to be getting rare now, as not been fitted new for about 12 years.

Almost certainly a Bosch AS3. I blagged a brand new one (new, not reconditioned) off of ebay for £70 for my 406. There are usually good choices of second hand pumps as well. Swapping it is a bit fiddly but can be done by the DIY enthusiast. Throttle arm shaft seals can leak down the back of the pump, if so you can change this without removing the pump from the car as far as I know :)
