To DAB or not DAB

Post by Bandit12 »

Hi Guys Happy New Year to you all. I'm planning a stereo upgrade in my C5 estate and was thinking of getting a DAB one. Would I need to change the aerial on the car? Its the standard roof mounted one with inbuilt satnav/ampilfier stuff.

Anyone done the upgrade already?

Yes you'll need to fit another aerial, I tried a mag one but got a much better signal with one stuck to the inside of the windscreen, rather than change the head unit and lose sat nav etc better to get a Pure or Alpine (same unit) add on and connect it via the aux socket in the glove compartment.

I would agree, keep FM as well if you can, the DAB signal is not good everywhere.

We don't have DAB at all out here. Not much ordinary radio either, mountains in the way. Do you get better sound or is it like digital TV, instead of ghosting it just breaks up?

Yes to both questions, better sound but the signal is pretty much all or nothing plus totally quiet background compared with FM.

Do not knock them to hard....if I was in any big city I would have one in a shot, a flat county, in a shot, on motorways a lot, in a shot.....depends on where you are most of the time

PS...did this for a mate, for a PC game....feel free to use it as your Avatar

would love fitted DAB in my c5 s1 - esp BBC R5 and 6
signal here is ok

the only way I can do it, is to get my portable dab and plug it into my aux socket (connects 2)
works well, just looks stupid ;)

worth trying this first Bandit?

Ok guys you have convinced me :-) Thanks for avatar stickyfinger but I cannot open it. It just has a box with the word "image" and a small red cross in top corner.

Hi Bandit,

I put a Sony DAB unit into my car about 2 years ago as my amplifier on the Ariel had gone and it has it's good and bad points.... Good is when it works it's brilliant with amazing sound quality and the choice of stations, bad is when it's bad it's awful mines has an auto tune to FM so if I'm listening to a station I can pick up on FM and the quality drops it auto tunes to FM but even here in the central belt of Scotland it can do this constantly.. the other serious issue is travelling unless I do a complete scan none of my stations will pick up on a journey down to Manchester as they're on a different frequency.

Regards
