A strange thing happened last night

Post by c.morewood »

Driving home, empty road, I put my foot down and accelerated to 60 mph before using engine braking to the roundabout.
The K engine management light came on as I was slowing .. I went round the roundabout and accelerated up a reasonably steep hill 700ft in a mile or so. I had what I thought was an extra 20BHP as I accelerated. In fact I had trouble keeping below 60. as I coasted down the other side , I could feel something wasn't right.. lumpy suspension felt through the steering wheel, or something like that. .. but I was drfinately getting noticeably more power on acceleration.. she felt like a young car again..
It wasn't until I got home and went to put her in the garage I realised she was missing on one cylinder.. but not the usual missing like when she has a lumpy cold start.. no, she was shaking quite a lot. and the engine was running very roughly, occasionally picking up to all 4.. then missing and shaking again
I experimented for a while , revving the engine and then letting it idle again. Each time it would fire on all 4 as soon as it left idle but would run roughly at idle.
I switched off the engine and started again.. the K is still there but the rough running dissapeared..Any ideas as to what it might have been?

Have you popped a Lexia on the car yet Chris? That should give a clue...

Sounds like it might be over boosting or over fuelling somehow.. Rather odd as most faults cause a loss of power not an increase...

Haven't had chance for a Lexia yet.. too much driving others round at the moment 450 miles since Sunday and I swear I've only been local.
Yes it gave me a surprise when the light came on and she took off like a scalded cat.. as you say I expected less power not more.
I'll check out the EGR Paul.
BTW the pre heater seems to be working well .. still getting about 500 to half a tank in these sub zero temperatures, compared to about 450 last winter.
Thanks again

Silly me

Post by c.morewood »

I put her on the Lexia today and discovered a couple of permanent faults in the Air temp sensor and the Flowmeter.
Silly me, I either hadn't put the connecting plug back in when I was fitting the pre heater or hadn't pushed it in far enough, It had disconnected and was lying loose.
However there were a couple of intermittent faults I was interested in and wondered if they could have led to the symptoms above?
1.Diesel pressure/ diesel pressure regulator coherence
2. Fuel pump supply coherence
Can anyone tell me what I should be looking at to stop these appearing again?

Thanks
Chris

I'd say both of those could cause it Chris..

And I'd say they had a common root cause... The fuel pump stops which causes a pressure fall which causes both faults to be logged...

What caused it though is a bit of a head scratcher.. It almost looks like it was related to the immobiliser or to the double injection relay..

I'd be inclined to look at the double relay but only on the basis that I once had a vaguely similar problem on my Activa...

I had a look at the relays under the bonnet and gave them a spray with contact cleaner, but they looked ok I'm hoping thats where the imobiliser and double injection relays are located. I had a look in the BOL but couldn't find anything that would give me the location.
Another downer.. the passenger bay is damp again.. Can't be the scuttle as that is sealed tight .. and there's no smell with it ...so it must be the aerial again.

Double relay is next to the injection ECU - in the box next to the Water expansion bottle on the left!

Chris, that's annoying about the leak again..

Did you make sure the lump of plasticine was in place under the scuttle between the edge of the wing and the blower intake?

It looks random and appears to have no function but it's there to direct water flowing down the roof edge gutters away from the heater intake...

I'll have a look Jim. Can't say I've seen it. Is there a photo of it anywhere? .. service citroen? etc.

To be boring and serious, what about a strained earth lead going intermittent as the drivetrain moves with braking?

I have to supply the yin and the yang; if I'm going to be a right prat on one thread I should be helpful on another.

Based on the description, it was my first thought.

No sign of a strained earth.. I've got a doubled up earth to the gearbox and everything else looks fine.. need to put her on the Lexia again to see if the intermittent problem has resurfaced.. Visually checked the double relay and gave it a spray . the same with the Injector ecu pins, though they all looked fine.
Couldn't find any plasticine anywhere near the heater intake .. can't see why it wouild be required as the intake seems to be out of the way of any water running off the windscreen or drains..but I'm sure all will become clear in the photos Jim.
Thanks for all the suggestions,
Chris
