What to buy ?

The question to the panel this evening is.....

My brother in law is looking to sell his Renault Scenic and wants to get a newer car. He's got a £4k budget and is looking for either a Citroen or Peugeot - my suggestion as I've got the Lexia kit !
His requirements are relatively simple - smallish car (C3 and smaller), cheap road fund licence, only looking to do under 4000 miles per year, easy maintenance, and must be able to fit a road bike (pushbike) in it along with him in the drivers seat (no passengers).
What would you recommend ? Or, possibly more important, what would you stear clear of ?

We bought a C3 old shape 1.4hdi, 70 bop, nothing special, for our children to learn to drive. It tuned out to be a good little motor, bought it with 30k on the clock now it has 87k. A few maintenance bills but nothing too horrible, especially compared with depreciation on newer cars.

You can just get a road bike in the he back, rear sets down which takes a few seconds, either by dropping the front wheel out or by putting the passenger seat well forward and dropping the wheel at 90degrees to the frame into the resulting space.

If it's only 4k miles a year maybe a petrol version would be better and much cheaper, but I don't know anything about the petrol engines.

If he could tolerate something bigger, a Berlingo mutlispace is bike friendly.

Thanks for the info Richard, good to know a bike will fit in the C3. I'd reckon on a petrol engine due to the low annual mileage. He's keen to get a smaller car now so it realistically needs to be C3 size or smaller.

OK, so modern over style.....OK

For limited trouble free but unspectacular motoring in a small car.....I cannot say a single bad word about the little Kia we have on the drive way...... .2nd hand the Picanto is really "cost effective", the Auto is just such fun.....the roof line gives good clearance to the boot and I get my Mothers wheel chair in it no problem with the rear seats folded down (as they always are )....and cheap
