Citroen Xsara Picasso 2.0 HDI 2005
I have the above Picasso and in the cold weather over the last two days it has struggled to start. It has been below freezing. Story so far:
Pre heat light goes off in a second hardly get chance to see it.
Diagnostic machine showed no faults
Has been into local garage who checked glo plugs and they are fine
They checked the relay for the glo plugs on the machine and it worked fine power was getting from relay to glo plugs.
Appears to be no power getting to relay under normal engine circumstances so they think its an electrical fault somewhere. They looked at all the wiring but couldn't find anything and suggested an auto electrician. Having been in a similar position before with electrical issues am loathe to start down this road.
The other thing that happened this morning which may be totally unconnected. I had tried to start it three times with no join, engine barely turning over. One the forth time some sort of alarm sounded and on the fifth. Finally started on the 6th attempt.
It starts fine in normal temperatures e.g just above freezing. The garage said they have had three Picassos in the last fortnight with the same problem so sounds like a common issue
Has anyone come across this and have any suggestions.
Thanks

I take it your battery is good ?
Re: Citroën Xsara Picasso 2.0 HDI 2005
new battery fitted six months ago so should be
Re: Citroën Xsara Picasso 2.0 HDI 2005
It's the starter motor. It always is on these engines, though no one will agree with me. .
Re: Citroën Xsara Picasso 2.0 HDI 2005
have just been out now and disconnected the temperature sensor/coolant sensor and the glo plug light stayed on and the fan kicked in straight away. Could this be faulty and making the engine think its warm when it isn't, hence plug heater not working
Re: Citroën Xsara Picasso 2.0 HDI 2005
It might be, but the HDi motors rarely need the glow plugs. The ones on my Berlingo with the same engine haven't worked for years.
It was sluggish to start a couple of years ago in winter. I changed the battery, checked everything. It made no difference at all. Malcolm at Savoy told me to change the starter motor. I did. It's been fine ever since. Did the same with a C5 110 HDI I had for a while too.

thanks, are going to start with the temperature sensor as only a few quid. It was -4 yesterday and today, miles colder than it has been. If that doesn't work will look to starter motor.
Re: Citroën Xsara Picasso 2.0 HDI 2005
If the engine is barely turning over, it's nothing to do with the temperature sender.

All the problems I have had with the 2.0. Hdi, both starting and running have been down to the pressure regulator on the HP diesel pump.

To quote the OP
"engine barely turning over"..
I take this to mean the engine is cranking very slowly, a common issue with these engines in cold weather - Berlingoforum has loads of similar posts. This will not be to do with the glowplugs not operating, or the fuel pump, or the temperature sender unit. The starter will either be gummed up or the brushes worn out.

Sorry, missed that bit.
Re: Citroën Xsara Picasso 2.0 HDI 2005
I agree with Norhern Mike as I'd issues with my C5 two winter ago not starting and a new battery dudnt make a jot of a difference I'd a replacement starter fitted and the cars been fine ever since
