2.1 XUD.... any good? Veg friendly?

Post by lankytim »

Hi all,

I know this is in the wrong part of the forum as it relates to a 2.1 TD Pug 406 but I thought I'd ask in here as loads of Citroens have this engine fitted, plus the Pug section of the forum is very quiet!

Anyway, I've spied a cheap 406 2.1 TD- can it run on veg? If not is it easily converted with a new pump? are these engines known for their longevity and POWER??

If I do go ahead I will probably be selling my P reg XM hatch exclusive, MOT nearly up, has ABS light on (possibly just needs resetting now) and needs a pair of patches on the front subframe and a pair of patches in the corners of the front scuttle (above the inner wing, easy fix).

The idea os the Pug will be a better daily driver, and something I can just get in and drive without too much faff. Family life and constant motor fettling don't make good bedfellows.

If it has a Bosch pump a resounding yes, if it's the Lucas pump, a big fat no!

My guess is, that it has a Lucas pump, and as far as I know, only the early 2.1td XM's came with the bosch pump.

Yes, I believe all 2.1 406s had the Lucas EPIC pumps and therefore as you say Dei, definitely a big fat no!

The only 2.1TD engines s to have a Bosch pump was some mid-life XMs. They started off with Lucas mechanical, then had Bosch and then returned to Lucas EPIC for the last couple of years of production.

I had a K-reg series 1 XM and a P-reg Series 2 XM that both had Bosch pumps.

Nice engines. But... unless you're going to make your own veg from waste, the price of diesel is dropping , it's probably not worth the hassle.

You need a Bosch pump from and XM or possible a Xantia but I have never really considered it worth doing as the seals are likely to fail and unless you can repair the pump yourself its likely to soak up any savings you have made in fuel costs, especially with prices as they are at the moment.

I had a dream last night about a Bosch pump with leaky seals Peter..

I'd just bought a car with such a pump fitted. Not sure what the car was...

Old original seals are not veg proof and will fail. Not only on veg but diesel too...

Recent replacement seals will be veg. proof as all diesel now contains some veg. derivatives so they have to be proof against that.

I still see a V6 Xantia and a C1 there Peter unless someone has done a sneaky engine transplant overnight... Imagine a C1 with a 2.1TD in it... 8-)

LMAO about Brand, true about the costs, the cost of veggie oil is probably more than diesel now.

No one seemed particularly bothered he was missing apart from the little Malaysian woman who I work with, and she gave me a proper telling-off, but I was very paranoid because the police were sniffing around. Obviously, I'd eaten the evidence...

REF to someones comment above. Xantia 2.1s NEVER had Bosch they were Lucas EPIC only...

1.9 TD Xantias all had Bosch, BUT its not been prooved yet that a 1.9 Pump would work on a 2.1, there are small differences, though theres no reason why if the fueling was upped to compenstate for the extra CC

Id like to try and see if a Bosch 1.9 pump will work on an XM... but thats some time off..

Actually, Tim, the engine and setup is IDENTICAL to the XM you have.

The 2.1 is a more modern design, is useing rocker fingers and hydraulic lifters, same as the HDi that followed...

There is a bit of work converting to Bosch Pump from an EPIC setup, and remembering to move the Pump mounting studs on the pump back plate for the correct fuel pump timing needing...

The 2.1 doesn't have balance shafts does it? I wonder if the belt can be removed from a 2.5 to eliminate a failure point...... Perhaps worth another thread for that question.
