Sudden failure of CV joint

Post by RichardW »

Anyone else had this happen? Noticed on Friday an unwelcome noise, which is now there every time more than 1/4 turn of steering (particularly LH) is applied with the power on. Doesn't sound exactly like a CV joint, but I can't imagine it's anything else - or is it? I suspect the offside (which is the side I did the bearing on a few months ago)....coincidence??? Very surprised that it has gone downhill so fast - the gaiter is intact as far as I know (unlike the other side which appears to be a bit loose!). My only other thought is the diff bearings in the box  it does sound a bit like the time we left a SIII Land Rover in 4WD and wound the transfer box up..... #-o

are you sure the noise is coming from the side you think its coming from Richard,

if the other side gaiter is loose it will almost certainly have lost its grease!!!!,

has the CV joint on the suspect side been been removed from the shaft recently????, if so maybe whoever did this caught the cage on clocking the joint off, this can fracture the cage, which could cause sudden failure of the joint

It's always difficult to pin the noise down Malcolm, but it certainly appears to come from the OS (when driving- need to get SMMBO to drive it so I can observe from the other side / outside - do you think she'll try and run me over though.... :rofl2: ) CV joint was my first thought on Friday and a quick look under showed a bit of a weep from the NS joint, and an apparently loose clip. Will need to get it jacked up and have a listen I guess before committing to either side (or the box.... 8-[ ). I've only had it 11k, but neither has been apart in that time - no idea about before, but it doesn't look like a new boot or joint.

Could possible the o/s drive shaft centre bearing, I had one fail and it allowed the shaft to drop out of the diff causing loss of drive. Try pulling /pushing it and see if it moves.

Ahem 307... posted it in here as much busier :P

Actually Malcolm's thoughts of a broken cage seem to fit - since it came on very quickly, and it sounds more like a bearing in distress (a sort of cracking noise) rather than the more usual sharp clunk that a worn joint makes as the balls run over the wear track. Looks like a new joint can be had for £20 (although confusingly the same company offers a full shaft for £35.... :?: - I'd be worried about the quality!) - I'd probably get a puller too, to avoid having to hammer the old one off, and pulling the tri-ax apart.

possible the wheel bearing as i have heard/seen a case were the nylon cage that contains the ball's was causing a clicking sound,

you shouldn't need a puller as long as you hit/strike the CV joint in the right place,

with boot removed tilt the joint hard over one way, and give the tip of one of the castellations a sharp blow/wholap with a hefty knockometer,

use the shaft its self as a guide to slide the knockometer along

Says OE std and 2 year unlimited miles warranty, so it can't be bad for £19! They also work via ebay, price is lower, but add on postage makes it a bit more. Like I say they do complete shafts for £35....

This sounds exactly like the noise my Berlingo (still) makes. It's had as near as damnit everything replaced on the front end apart from the right hand side wishbone and the CV joints/drive shafts.

I know what it's getting next if replacing the CV joint fixes Richard's

It's ok I won't tell anyone, especially one of the moderators. :-D

I only ask because people on this forum have a tendency to natter on about a problem with their car without indicating which of the 5 cars in their signature (or not in their signature as the case may be) that they're talking about!
