Has the HDI engine design been changed?

Post by MarkandCath »

The time has come to change our old faithful Dispatch. 287k DW8 engine is still going (I swear it is the fresh oil and filter every 6k that has helped it) but it and the van are now tired.

The old HDi engines had serious issues with seized injectors and black death caused by leaking injectors, you all know the score. My question is simply this, has anything been done to fix the injector related problems? I am happy to buy another new Dispatch but if the engine still has issues that haven't been addressed then I will look elsewhere.

So have Citroen redesigned the engine or is it still the same as it was?

No you have had misleading information there Sir! The old hdi engine IS the best one to have...

The 2.0 8v HDi 110 IS the best hdi engine they ever did. Fitted to 406s and Xantias from 1998 to 2001 then Mk.1 C5s its the one to have!

They have the most reliable injector setup, useing a single Bolt and clamp setup, the shallowest injector depth, out them all...

The engine you are thinking of with injector problems is the 2.2 16v HDi engine fitted to the C5s from 2001 onwards! These engine are reknowned for sticky injectors...

Ive never failed to get an injector out of a 2,0 8v engine, and in 283k that mine did I only had one seal fail! And I know of a Taxi 406 on 300k and never had a seal, and a Xantia before that went to 286k without any injector seals!

The specific problem of water ingress on these was solved by fitting a small plastic diverter. Later cars had a somewhat different arrangement I understand, thus avoiding the problem of water getting where it shouldn't.

However I don't know whether this was the sole cause of seized injectors or not.

My experience with the early 8 valve Hdi is the same as Pauls, I have one in a 406 and another in a C5, the 406 has done 231,000 miles and the C5 200,000, they are both mostly original including the DMF and clutch, the only problem I have had has been the HP diesel regulator on the C5, I replaced that with a secondhand one off ebay, after a couple of tries, and its been fine since.

If I have to replace either of these cars it will hopefully be with the same again.

Buy mine Taffy. It needs new rear arm bearings at some point and the AC doesn't work. That's all that's wrong with it :-)

I'd have a C5 110 HDi over a Xantia any day now, unless it was a V6 Xantia.as a toy. They are really very good cars for the money.

I disliked the c5 mk.1 with a passion originally. . However having a 51 plate hdi 8v 110 AUTO I now have little issues with them now. The autobox needs a lockup electro valve but other then that no issues..

going back to the original post, my feeling now is if I was to upgrade my 8v hdi, as the car is getting tired now.. I would go for the 16v 2.0 not the 1.6
its just a feeling :) not based on much except odds and sods on here..
not sure when this engine was used up until, but sure its in new style Picassos and so on..

that would be my bet
