whoops...

Post by chinkostu »

so, replaced the spheres on the xantia last week, already a massive difference in ride but didn't seem quite as soft as other Xantias i've ridden in. poked around for a few hours looking for air getting in anywhere and eventually decided to check if i had the right spheres. ECP supplied me with two IFHS spheres, labelled XA 45 FL. turns out...they're for hydractive cars and mines just the 6 sphere antisink jobbie.

now, i can't return and reorder as a) they've done 600 miles already and b) the old spheres were so knackered that you were riding in a bouncy castle :rofl2: and also because i misread the website and ordered the wrong bleeding ones (£8 cheaper too!)

is there going to be any damage from running the wrong spheres for a few weeks, as christmas funds are dwindling and i don't think the missus would appreciate me spending another £50/60 for my mistake!

i already, thankfully, have a potential buyer for the wrong spheres, as he runs a HDI hydractive which takes these spheres!

so just the slightly firmer ride to worry about? glad to know. wish i'd noticed before i'd fitted them but then by the time the replacements arrived i would have broken my back on the m6..m1..m25...m2... etc etc ;)

It won't do any harm but I would have thought hydractive spheres would give you a very firm ride, probably no worse than the average Audi but it certainly wouldn't suit me, I always used comfort spheres and would probably have used 4 x accumulator spheres if I could have got away with it.

Still at least its in vogue, most modern cars don't seem to have any suspension at all.

Thats how it is, no softer than the 206 but not back breakingly firm. the 2 spheres i replaced were completely past it, dead to the world! However it does then mean i'm not wandering around looking for phantom stiffness issues (leaks, height etc) as its clearly just the spheres.

Missus will have a shock though when I change them!

No. The suspension is in effect a Hydractive system stuck in Sport mode - you could run it on the wrong speres until they too lose pressure without them causing any damage to the suspension.

It still rides good though which is amazing. Not magic carpet, but sitting in my 'rents almera over speedbumps really showed how good hydro is!
