C5 suspension pipe swap advice please

Unread post by citroenxm »

Hello C5 owners...

Ive a job to do on a C5 Friday, I need to change Pip No.3 in the diagram below.. on the suspension side.

What procedure do I need to take? Im rather suprised needing to change a pipe on a C5, Id be expecting never to need to by this time in Citroens Carier..

Do I need to de pressure the system so I dont get a yellow bath, or just lowest setting???

Start the engine. Select the lowest suspension setting (using the buttons in the centre console). Stop the engine. Jack up the car or raise it on a lift. Change the pipe. Drop the car. Start the engine and select the normal setting. If you really feel that you need to purge air from the system, raise the car to the highest setting and then drop it to its lowest setting a few times.
OR.
You can go technical using the lexia diagnostic system and fiddling with bleed screws if you really like that sort of thing.

If you want to bleed the rear section out connect a tube to the bleed nipple on the rear axle, you can run the pipe into a clean container and use it again. I think BXs system will suffice though.

Had to replace item 6 (Rubbing electric wire set up rust spot) rear wheels dangling free with car body supported on axle stands. Suspension set to low, and for confidence to ensure that the system is depressurised open the centre bleed niple with clear tube attached. Just a few drips of fluid, no pressure.
As each end on the pipe is removed I have plastic caps to fit over the end and reduce dripping to a minimum while you are wangling the new pipe into place.
As BX says a few Citrobics to purge the air out when the new pipe is fitted etc. (I also found that the height corrector rod was sloppy and rusted so needed changing later).

Hope that helps.

Andy.

Excellent guys.. thanks..

they sound like older sinker systems.. when key is off pressure is lost.. without needing to open a pressure release screw.

heres fingers crossed then..

WELL WHAT A DISASTER!!!

A warning about the pipe siezing into the alloy T joint was not mentioned, OR no doubt knowing my luck has never happened to anyone!

Anyway, yes, the curly pioe had siezed into Item 4... so, job abandond due to destroyed pipe, and a quick call to the dealer to order in items 4, 5 and 6... all for 47 quid.

Strangely, the pipes all came out of the struts, and also out of item 2 ...

Also, the pipes are rather different to Xantia pipes. The unions are 11mm heads and 3.5mm pipes, however they use the seal that the Xantia switched too in 1999 - 2000 just before production end which, was it C.morewood found out on his Xantia..

The pipe is normal by the looks of it 3.5mm od and the c5 flare was 11mm spanner size where the xantia one above was still an 8mm flare.. cant tell you the thread type on the flare though..

ill getca pic of the c5 connections on monday when I fit the new pipes to the car.

Paul,

I would try and salvage the flare fittings if possible for future use.

I can confirm this is the same fitting (c.morewood)on the rear hydrauliuc cylinders of my Xantia as well. How I remember the hassle :-D.

And here is the actualy C5 pipe connection, as seen, its 3.5mm pipe work, with an 11mm Flare, and the Steel "Block" IS tight on the pipe!

This particular connection was out of the Strut supply.. but all connections are the same type..
