help please c4 picasso 1.6 hdi engine problem

Post by ianskill »

hi, i recently bought above car for the girlfriend.Cut a long story short, the turbo failed and someone started to strip parts to diagnose. We bought it,stripped and checked everything and rebuilt engine with overhauled turbo including replacing or cleaning filters, banjo bolts etc. Car had head removed, pistons and crank checked, rebuilt with replaced oil pump, new gaskets and cambelt. Car started and ran fine with minimal whistling from turbo.Took car half mile and took it straight MOT and passed.
Problem we now having is intermitentley the car seems to be mis firing under load, the mpg will drop by half. This happened last night, now twice. Engine running at idle with strange cracking noise like the exhaust manifold extremely hot and trying to cool sound. This noise apparent every 20 secs or so. Engine running bit rough like the top engine around injectors vibrating sound, dunno if an injector fault but no warning light. I thought maybe the car trying to do regen but dont think it would be under powered and rough. I am waiting for mates leads so i can put it on peugeot planet tomorrow, but any help appreciated. cheers

Peugeot Planet wont help you with a Citroen, you need Lexia, but useually bundled together.

If the engine management light IS NOT lit on the dash, lexia wont be able to tell you much in errors as the ecu hasnt recorded any.. though lexia can show you live runing parameters for the ecu etc so you can see live whats going on which may lead to a help..

Ah, there is a known issue with the oil supply to the turbo on the 1.6HDi engine. I would take a look on the forum for them, but the engine may well need a thorough overhaul to prevent it eating any more turbochargers. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

You may extract a code. But prob unlikely. Maybe the temp switch is switching to a cold reading intermittently, live data would show this.
Perhaps an injector is faulty, and overfueling, a diesel leak off test would prob show this.

Did you read above James? The engine has HAD a full rebuild, down to head off pistons out!!! bango bolts and filters cleaned/removed!!

The only other thing I can think, did you remove the Turbo feed Pipe oil filter/strainer??

Oops, not properly.

I wonder if the sump was taken off? I can see gaskets were changed, but for the whole engine, or the head? I also wonder if this has a DPF, and if this is at fault (or sensors that are linked to the DPF and its' regeneration)? Definitely a Lexia session needed.

I would have a look at the banjo bolt, and see if there is a VERY small filter in it (about the size of a finger nail for the original design, a long tubular affair for the re-designed bolt).

Good point James - see Hamster's thread regarding oil pickup.

I wouldn't know, never having had to do so, or having your wealth of experience. I just thought to ask, to help eliminate possible causes.
