1999 Xantia TD radiator cooling fans coming on when cold

Post by ecohouse1 »

Strange this. No problems with cooling fans. They would come on when the engine reached 90 degrees and switch off once the temp came down.

Car unused for a few days when it was very damp/wet. Start car from cold and fans start on full tilt. After driving up to op temperature they shut off and act normally. Nothing abnormal for a few days then again random fans with cold engine. I am suspecting dodgy temp sender or a relay? Where is the relay? Worried it will get worse and either not work iron s the time!

Any pointers I could look at?

Many thanks

Thanks Clogzz, I am hoping its damp in one of the relays causing a sticky connection. Its pretty random - usually OK but then start car after work and fans come on full blast for a short while. Stopped at the shops for a wee while and when I came out again - full blast for a minute or two then off. Wierd.

Any likely culprits, has anyone had this happen to them?

More stangeness is my oil level warning light is also popping on for a few minutes after starting even though oil is at the top of the dipstick marker.

I suspect dampness is causing issues. Its been cloudy, drizzly or raining here for weeks in Aberdeenshire!

The connector on the brown temperature sensor needs a clean or tighten.

Cheers Clogzz. How do these plugs come off! I see a wire clip around it but do they pull out so that the plug can be lifted off? I was worried I would break something so went easy on them. I did "jiggle" the brown one around a bit and the fan has stayed off unless at 90 degrees!

You push the wire clip in, then pull the connector out.
If it works now, it may be good for a long time.
