Car won't start!

Post by Jaggiethistle »

Hi all
Citroen Synergie 2.0 HDI 2001. Car broke down this morning whilst doing the school run. The wife told me it just lost power. Got it towed home and the engine turns but won't fire. Any ideas??
Cheers

:( Classic symptoms of LP fuel pump failure - if it's got one. Post up the last 8 digits of the VIN, and we can check. If it doesn't then you will need to get it on a Lexia to see what it's upset about, might be a user near you: http://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/v ... 19&t=29178" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

could also be an injector

mine seemed to fail suddenly without notice , car wouldn't start for 10 months, unless I added easy start into the air intake side.. (may be worth trying this if you have some) ?
John

I don't know my way around the Service Citroen site well enough to say for sure if it has a pump in the fuel tank. Below is what the the fuel supply section says from your VIN number.
DW10ATED means it's an HDi 110 which (I think) all do have a lift pump in the tank. Someone will hopefully correct or confirm this. I have the same engine in my Xsara and the pump can be heard to run for a few seconds when turning the ignition on, prior to starting.

You've got the answer there....

INJECTION ASSOCIATED VARIANT MOUNTING BOSCH

Bosch systems have an in tank pump. You can see it if you look under "air and fuel supply" in the engine section, and then "fuel tank fuel gauge" where you will see it says:

1525 V4
GAUGE WITH PUMP

So, can you hear the pump hum for about 10s at key on (before trying to crank it)? If not, then there is the cause. Now, it might not be the pump, so you need to check that the pump is still getting power. If the pump is accessible from inside the car (no idea!) then you can check at the pump, otherwise you will need to find the double relay under the bonnet and check there. If it's got power then the pump is goosed. Try whacking the underside of the tank whilst someone cranks it - that may be enough to make it spring into life. Unfortunately it it is the pump, it may be a tank out job to change it....

If it's turning over and not firing then it could be either the camshaft or crankshaft sensor faulty or maybe just the connector has worked loose. The engine management system won't allow the engine to start if it can't tell what position either the camshaft or crankshaft are in.

If you have a manual it should tell you where the sensors are located. Otherwise a lexia session would seem like a good start (no pun intended!)

Can't seem to find a manual for the Synergie. All I have is the Owners handbook and it doesn't list what relays are what! :? Anyone know which is the relay for the fuel pump?? Checked the 20 Amp fuse in the same compartment and all is fine there.
Cheers Again

Check for manuals for the Peugeot 806, or the Fiat Ulysse. Barring the badges they are (on the whole) the same as the Synergie.

You can only get a manual on cd for these vehicles. I looked hard for one when I had my expert van.

Found the pump relay beside the battery attached to the inner wing. Can hear it clicking when the key is turned. Anyone know what models are covered with this in tank fuel pump? Just spent £400 on car two weeks ago getting it through MOT. Really don't want to spend another 130 on a new pump. Local scrap dealer has 2 still in the tanks sitting on a shelf but not sure if any of them will fit my car! [-o<
