C5 LED replacements for front sidelights in 05 model

Post by hamster99 » 23 Nov 2014, 00:18

Both of my front side lights have gone (again!) and I am thinking about replacing them with LEDs.

My problem is that standard type 233 bulbs do not fit correctly as the bulb holders are designed for mini bayonet bulbs with offset pins. Apparently this is because the original fitment bulbs were halogen.

Anybody sourced and fitted LED sidelights in a face lifted C5 and are they OK?

Also just noticed some places are selling LEDs for canbus systems. Do these work in non-canbus systems like the C5.

I remember seeing one model with a CREE LED, somewhere recently, that fits the socket, but the price tag was ridiculously high ... I'll try to dig up the link ... the halogen bulb type is H6W, right?

Thanks vborovic, yes the sidelights are H6W.

Whilst thinking about lights my front fog lights don't really light up the sides of the road that well and as I do a lot of driving on unlit country roads in the winter I wondered whether I could get brighter bulbs.

Is it possible to fit 100w bulbs or will that fry the wiring (not sure if in UK 55w is legal max) or is there some really bright alternative like an LED and has anyone fitted anything similar. The front fog bulbs are H11 type.

Anything higher than 55W is not road-legal, meaning you could be fined if stopped by the police ... I'd go for Philips Blue or Diamond Vision (i.e. : http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Philips-Diamo ... 3f3206b521" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) ... as for the H6W, I think this should fit, but you'd have to ask the seller for the dimensions confirmation: http://www.ebay.com/itm/2x-H6W-434-433c ... 1071520473" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Brighter is not always best with Fog-Lamps, you get massive light scatter.

In my "fun car" I run 35w Halogens in the Fog-Lamps, very yellow but less scatter and great in fog. It is also dangerous to use fog lamps unless its is foggy, you will blind other drivers.

That said I also have 150w Super White HID bulbs in a pair of switchable CIBIE Oscar Projectors, really do not cut me up, I can melt your rear number plate on the flick of a switch :)

The C4 Picasso uses those god awful H6Ws for side lights as well - after coughing nearly a fiver for a new one (I'm sure it was only ONE!!) at Halfords, I just bought some of the ones with resistors from e-bay - for little more than a fiver a pair. Work fine, look a little blue, but who cares - they don't pop every five minutes, and don't confuse the bulb warning system :-D
