Suspension stuck in lowest position.

Post by dave_s13 »

Car threw up a suspension error message yesterday, "do not exceed 55mph".

The car is now stuck in its lowest setting, ie on the bump stops.

I've tried the bsi reset, twice, no joy. Thing is I can't gear any whirring or activity from the suspension pump area, is it separate from the power steering with its own fuse?

Any ideas? The only independent citroen specialist in Leeds is at good 14mile trek with many speed bumps along the way, it won't be a pleasant journey!

Car is a 2005 C5 2.0 hdi vtr manual by the way, cheers.

On earlier models there is a Maxi fuse located under the engine bay fusebox. Your '05 may differ.

Check these threads for additional information.

Cheers.

I've since looked up into re the maxi fuses. I checked all the ones under the compartment but it seems some lie below that. I'll have a look later.

I assume driving above 5mph in the lowest setting is not such a good idea?

Correct, OK for moving it about but watch the nose on ramps. And if you jack it up USE AXLE STANDS or she WILL TRY and kill you !

Aye, fully on board with the use of axle stands etc.

I'm pretty sure my recovery service will cover taking it to the garage so that should solve that issue. I'll check the fuses in the morning though and see how it goes.

Do a forum search on Compressor pumps, a common problem it seems is a corroded wire inside the motor, it looks easy to repair but as the units are easy to find, most replace them for about 150/200 quid incld labour.

Best bet to start is the maxi as said and don't forget check its contacts in the box as well. If it blows again it is normally (it seems) a good bet to look to the internal motor wires.

Put a tester across the connections and check first rather than blow a maxi fuse ?, can you do that ?

Too late... New fuse in and it started to rise, then stopped. Fuse popped again.

I shorted the fuse with some long nose pliers just long enough to get it back up to the middle position so at least it can now be driven up to 55mph.

Needs to new compressor/pump by the look of it. At least I can get it to a garage now anyway.

Update.

Used but good pump fitted yesterday and all back to normal.

Cost £175 all in.

Pump - £90
LDS - £20
Labour - £65

Thinking about selling it now if anyone is interested in a 2 owner 94k mile fsh vtr manual. It's a lovely car but my wife hates it for some reason. As it's panned out its ended being her getting to work car so not ideal.

Do you still have the old pump?

No it was done on exchange. Ie. In exchange for money, I'll take your pump off you ☺

To be fair, given a pump costs upward of say sixty quid off eBay, with no guarantee then what I paid isn't too bad. The other issue is being stupid busy with 3 young kids, a job and all that stuff. There just isn't any time to spend messing about on the drive, especially when you need the car.
