C5 2.2tdi 2nd hand suppression pump HELP PLEASE

Unread post by vectrum »

Hi all, help needed please.
Iv got a C5 2.2 sx tdi and the suspension pump and ecu has gone wrong (diagnosed via an independent garage) the car has an AA insurance cover that will pay up to £465 towards the repair
but the garage is quoiting me £590 just for the reconditioned part or £750 for a new one, with fitting on top im looking at a total of £1100 (so iv got to cough up £635 towards it.
Now iv had a look via online breakers and I can get 2nd hand pumps from £60 with a 1 to 3 months guarantee.
When I pointed this out to the garage they said you cannot fit a 2nd hand unit as they are coded to the car.
I told them there is no way im paying the price they quoted me and that I believe I have read that others have fitted the 2nd hand pumps with no issues to witch she replied
“if you buy a 2nd hand unit we will fit it for you but we wouldn’t normally”
So the question is are they telling me crap to get £1100 out of me or is it true that you cannot fit a 2nd hand suppression pump with an ecu to the c5?

I'm pretty sure the pumps aren't coded to the car. The ECU might be but I seriously doubt both have failed. It might be worth getting a second opinion. Did you get it checked over by a citroen specialist?

Yes is the simple answer to that. I switched a pump (well Phil did) on my old Mk1, not more than £200 if I remember correctly.
And, if they are using a "standard" code reader and do not have a Lexia?, then they are talking total crap because they are guessing.

I believe the ECU is coded but it'll probably be a maxi-fuse that's failed or the pump motor burnt out. You can swap the ECU between pumps easily enough.... so new pump, old ECU.

There was an excellent article on here a while back showing how to make repairs to a dead suspension pump by rebuilding the motor. I only wish I could find it again but hopefully someone who's better at searching the forum can find it.

That might be another way out of your situation but like Mike and Sticky I'd be very surprised if it was coded to the car. Normally only things with a definite security connotation are...

Here's a link to some links covering most of the problems and fixes with the suspension pump.

If I read this correctly a failed BHI ECU can open a constant supply (instead of a timed one) to the pump resulting in it burning out ......

The BHI (combined suspension pump & ECU) is 100% not coded to the car, however there are a few options to configure depending on the spec of the car, can be done easily & no problem with lexia if using a 2nd hand one.

I believe they are the same as if I remember right that's one of the options you program.
