leaking automatic transmission

Post by RoyChristie »

V6 Xantia losing autobox fluid, has dumped a litre.
Topped it up.
Gearbox has a dipstick at the front edge and a blue cap on a breather on top.
Is this an AL4 gearbox. I find no spilt fluid on top of the box, none around the dipstick, nor any spill visible when the air filter box is removed.
The car is covered in oil underneath.
Where, other than Citroen, can I get a seal kit for the fluid cooler?

OR has anyone got the ref numbers for the seals? 2 between the cooler and the box and one for the hollow retaining bolt

3 rubber rings for £112 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
phew

heeeeeeelp
have a fun day

I would look at the banjo joint. I have no personal experience of this gearbox, but I remember CitroJim highlighting this as a potential leak point, and that it could leak enough over a short time period to cause the box to fail. I also recall that Mandrake had an issue, and had to go hunting for a replacement set of seals (which CitroJim was able to advise him on).

Yes, check the Banjo! Easy access if you take the front left wheel off then remove the wheel arch liner.

The original alloy washers are STILL available from Citroen - at least they were at the time I wrote that thread. They're a few quid a piece and you need two. (The part number only supplies one)

At a pinch copper washers that have been flame annealed can be used - the ones I fitted on that car from a Halfords copper washer pack lasted until I got rid of the car without leaking, but I think eventually the dissimilar metals (copper washers and alloy housing) would cause electrolytic corrosion so if you can wait, get the genuine washers. Be careful not to get dirt and muck into the gearbox when the Banjo is uncoupled - any dirt getting inside will wreak havoc with the valve block...

Don't drive the car when it's short of oil as that could lead to a very rapid demise for the gearbox - the oil level should be checked with the engine idling on perfectly flat ground with the oil at 80 degrees - if you don't have a Lexia to measure the oil temperature and the gearbox is cold top it up until the level is just below the bottom mark, drive it for about 20 minutes to warm the gearbox up then top it up to half way between the marks.

Also it goes without saying only use Esso/Mobil LT71141 - any other kind of oil particularly Dexron 2/3 will be very harmful to the gearbox.

I have absolutely nothing to add to this thread except to say it's a good job you caught it Roy as I've known an oil leak at the banjo kill a 'box...

It can empty the 'box remarkably quickly..

I did a fluid change on a 4HP20 this afternoon and noted the 'box was a bit damp underneath so I took care to check the banjo. In the event it was LHM from a weepy pressure regulator.

Stempy, good point !

Thanks Steve,
the banjo is dry so I guess the failure is at seal 6 on the pic, at the other end of the banjo'd pipe.
more to follow
