806 gear cables

Post by paul in normandy »

I need to replace the gear cables on my 806, and I don't have a manual. The top one of the cables at the gearbox end has started slipping off the ball - its been the subject of some heroic bodging in the past, it appears to have been held on by a superglue bottle, which has now given up. I have not found the other one, I suspect this comes into the gearchange mechanism from below, so needs accessing from underneath.
How easy a job is it?
The top part looks reasonably easy to get at, presumably the plastic surround below the dash needs to come out and that hopefully will show where the cables go through the bulkhead.
Any advice - even if its along the lines of 'let some other poor sod wrestle with it' would be welcome.
Its a 1999 2.1 turbo diesel model - apparently there are 2 different types of cable so I will probably need to get them off to measure them before going to source some more.

I'm willing to bet it's not easy! Can you get a Revue Technique manual for it over there? Post up the last 8 digits of the VIN, and I'll get the part number for the cables for you.

Been to both the big factors in town (St Lo) and they both say its a Peugeot only part - and that the Peugeot parts department is not open Saturdays anyway...........
Last 9 digits of Vin no are 212477412
Looking it up on webdealauto http://www.webdealauto.com/fr/tirette-a ... .5615.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; its seems there are 2 different possibilities 2444AR or 2444CA, it would be handy to know which one to avoid the car being disabled for any longer than necessary.

Peugeot dealers locally got them in on their early afternoon delivery €195-23 so price is about the same.
Part number bang on - thanks Malcolm.
Just got to go and wrestle them into the car now, with the aid of the Revue Technique newly purchased this afternoon!!

So far I have managed to free off the cables on the top and get them out of the couplings and the housing.
At the gearbox end it took about 20 minutes to find the smaller end of the cable, that's still attached. The larger part of the ball and socket on the top has come off but its a bit difficult to see where the outer parts of the cable are housed on the top of the box.
Anyone got any advice on this - the revue technique has no pictures of this whatever!

All done - took about 6 hours altogether, the most difficult bit was getting the horeshoe clips that keep the outer cables in place back where they belonged.
Used a wide variety of tools though, including a scissors jack to keep one of the cables in the dashboard mounting, and extending magnet to get the horsehoe clip in place (same cable) and the magnetic led torch that I bought yesterday was invaluable!!
Gearchange much improved...............next job is replacing the steering rack on the BX.
