Engine swap 9HX 1.6 HDI engine

Post by ross7 »

Hello,

I need to replace an engine in a 2007 56 Picasso 1.6 hdi. Its a 92bhp 9HX engine (DV6ATED4)

Will a 9HX engine from a 2005 Peugeot 307 be compatible or will have to start swapping anything else such as looms/fuse boxes etc

thanks

Hi Ross

There were numerous small changes to the engines as they evolved around that time. You would need to look carefully at both to see if they had the same anciliaries - however, AFAIK the basic block is the same, so it should be possible to swap over all the 'extra' bits to end up with a compatible unit? What's up with the original? The actual engine is pretty tough - ours survived the oil pressure light coming on with (seemingly [-o< ) no adverse affects....

Not 100% sure but I think the cam chain (not the belt) has either snapped or the tensioner has failed.
This happened at idling so unsure if any engine damage that has resulted. The engine doesn't turn over now.

But it seems it will be cheaper to swap the engine than strip it down to investigate.
Was hoping to use a 9HX bare engine (block and head) and swap over the other bits to make good.

The Picasso is listed as a 92bhp but 307's are listed as 90bhp but not sure if there is an actual difference or its just how the manufacturers name them.

One of the design features of the HDi engine are the rockers that are meant to break in the case of a timing belt failure (instead of something big and expensive). These are what they look like;

The 1.6 DV6 is quite a different animal to that, James..... It is a 16V unit with twin cams - the exhaust cam (front) is driven by the cam belt, and the rear (inlet) cam by a chain in the head. If the chain has failed, then likely the head is scrap, and you are probably right that a replacement unit is the way to go. I'll have a mosey around service.citroen / service box later and see what the part nos show. Only way to tell really will be to have both stood together and confirm visually they look the same.
