206 DW8 crank issues

Post by chinkostu »

A year or so ago I got around to changing the belt on my 206 (1.9d, DW8B) only to find it shredding itself after less than 300 miles.

after removing the debris and replacing with the old belt I figured the Crank pulley was shot, so would need replacing. my issue is that every other DW8 engined car I have seen has a completely different style of pulley, like so

whereas mine is a more fuller looking affair, pretty much exactly like this

now, without spending >£70 on a new pulley, how can I check if it really needs replacing? tensioner and idlers were replaced recently which didn't help and the old belt desperately needs replacing however i'd rather not have it spew off again and potentially do the damage i narrowly missed last time!

Grab hold of the outside and see if it moves - to do that of course you will need to take the belt off. If you watch it carefully when its rotating you should see it running out of line if its failing. I expect the replacement pully is suitable, just a different method of manufacture.

Draw a line with TippEx or similar from the centre of the pulley out to the edge.
After a couple of days running and a few starts if the pulley is shot the line will separate as the inner and outer sections move independently.

IIRC there is a photo on here - somewhere :?
