No Dimmable Lights SOLVED

I replaced the difficult to access clock light today and thought whilst I was in there I would try to fix the lower fan/temp display light just below the radio. however on removing the troublesome bulb holder all the other lights on that circuit went out.. everything that is dimmable. My first thought was a fuse.. but the radio works and the outside temp and clock work.. most of the instrument cluster lights .. just not the dimmable ones.. Than I checked that the dimmer was still connected...is it possible that I've fused all the bulbs on this circuit? or maybe a loose wire in the dimmer?
Any ideas?

Dimmer can be faulty, if theres some dust on the track, but its basically a varible resister open the to elements. However, the dash lights dont work when its disconnected or not working.. you can check if it is the dimmer by simple shorting the two connectors with a piece of wire. This will allow the lights to work on full voltage.

Pulled a muscle in my back, so today was the 1st chance to get to the car.
Shorting out the wires going to the dimmer did nothing.. all those lights are completely dead...Jim do you have a wiring diagram for that circuit on the Mk2?
Any other suggestions?
I've had a look through the pages brought up by a search of "instrument lights" "dimmable lights"etc. with no success.

Thank you Gingerposter... Sorted out the lights... the car's handbook was completely wrong. The fuse F19 was labelled sidelights.. when it actually is the internal rheostat fuse.
Ainslie (gingerposter) gave me a more up to date version of the Haynes manual today which had the latest wiring diagrams.. even then the wiring diagram was correct but the list of associated fuses 2 pages before was wrong.
