Citroen Relay Engine Swap

Unread post by hobby-mad »

Hi there.

I've got a 51plate relay with a 1.9 non turbo engine.

It gets us around but not very quickly, 50mph on motorways and hills must be a voided at all costs.

The plan is to swap it for a turbo version, I was informed a 306 engine would be suitable... so that's what I've bought...

1.9TD xud from a 97 306.

I have some mechanical knowledge and do my own work where possible but swapping an engine is new to me so I'm looking for some advice or help (if anyone near liverpool)

I know the engine mount can be swapped, the gearbox from the non turbo may have to be fitted to the new engine along with the sump.

But... as for the turbo going into a non turbo there will be problems/more work with the vacuum side of things, so I was told, and this is something I know nothing about or what may need to be done.

Any help is appreciated.

Have you thought about the immobiliser side of things ? A 97 XUD will almost certainly have a coded diesel injection pump, it will be far easier to remove & de armour with the engine out.
Have you thought about finding the fault with your current engine ? Might be easier. Are you overloading the van ? Did the loss of power happen all of a sudden or was it a gradual thing ?

The xud does have the immobiliser, I was going to remove the anti tamper cover and fit a switched live.

There is nothing wrong with the old engine it's just old and has no power.

The new engine is currently sat in back of van/minibus.

The non-turbo gearbox will fit - mechanically. The gear ratios will not match the engine characteristics that well though. The shape and the weight of the Relay might level this to some degree.

There's clearly something wrong if you can only do 50 mph on the motorway, either that or the van is seriously overloaded
