If you can feel every bump, sounds like you have no give in the suspension, maybe the spheres are shot. This would make the ride very hard and quite dangerous at speed .

How much movement is there when you bounce it, should be about 4"+ on the rears and 2-3" on the fronts.

Re: 2003 hdi c5 estate very rough ride quality
If you have that amount of movement it should ride OK assuming you have it on all wheels, the car is obviously 'sitting' on the gas, failing rear trailing arm bearings could cause a hard ride at the rear but this is usually accompanied by the rear wheels leaning in at the top. The only other thing that could make an appreciable difference is the tyre pressures and types, does it have the original wheels?

Hi Peter ,
yes they are original alloys im going to change the tyres and get it all tracked and balanced aswell im finding that at 60mph plus an intermittent vibration comes into the steering wheel aswell it feels cyclical if that's the right word and the longer it runs at these speeds the worse it gets and seems to travel through the car can tracking or balance cause this ive checked the wheel bearings but there doesn't seem to be any movement

Re: 2003 hdi c5 estate very rough ride quality
It sounds as though both front wheels are a little out of balance but rotating at slightly different speeds, cornering could account for this of course, the out of balance areas are adding when in phase and cancelling when out of phase, it depends on the relative position of the wheels so getting them properly balanced should cure that.
Tracking has very little effect on the steering unless its a long way out but it will considerably effect the wear rate.

Thanks for that Peter
i have booked it in for 4 new tyres balance and tracking next week so ill see how that works also my tyre placard on the door frame says 205/65/16 but the tyre guy says he normally fits 55's on c5's what do you reckon would it make much difference she currently has 55's on front and 60's on the back they were on it when i bought it back in may

Re: 2003 hdi c5 estate very rough ride quality
The the bigger the better as far as the ride is concerned, mine has 195/65/15s and the ride is pretty good. The more rubber you have between the car and the road the better the ride will be.
