Does look a nice car but there are a lot of C5s on ebay at present, some very cheap, the only really safe way of buying one is to go and have a good long test drive and inspection. I bought my last two from ebay very cheaply but was aware of the problems and was able to fix them.

After a 2ltr really, VTR Spec (I have saved my Leather ) but am tempted by a 08-Plate 1.6TDI in Black

I think I will have a few long drives to view in the next few weeks

The early ones with the 8 valve engines are the most reliable and they can be had for a few hundred pounds but the facelift model looks more attractive although it has DPF of course.

I am NOT bidding on that, I don't need the roof or see the point in it also to much $$$ also going off the Mk3, boot roof is to low for my needs. Another facelift for me I think

Yeah, that ad is the same phone number, car and price. I'm not looking for anything bigger than 1.6 engine and I'm certainly not got multiple thousands to spend.

Mike, the general advice on here re the 1.6hdi is :- don't buy one.

ummmm, don't know if I agree with that totally as I have have a good impression of it. I remember they said that about the Stag Engine
Because of the "Known Problems" the valve is suppressed even for good cars, so there are good bargains in the range.

The 1.6TDI is a good engine but can suffer from turbo problems so preventative work needs to be budgeted in.

IF I get another I will do the following before using it.
Drop the Sump/Clean
Oil flow filter remove
Oil flush and change x 2 in short order
Full Service
Check injector tightness.......and the other Citroen stuff

The 1.6 is good. If you buy it from new and service it spot on time if not a good bit before..

The Stag engine was rubbish.

They *may* be good now, now all the problems have been ironed out and they've been rebuilt properly, with the castings cleared of crud, and decent temperature monitoring installed, and a proper fan, but they were a pile of crap when new. Two four-pots stuck together to make a V8 was never that good an idea TBH was it?

It's not inherently a bad idea; International went the other way and made a slant four out of half a "392" V-8.

I'm confident it (the Stag V-8) could have worked properly with more skill in the patternmaking and design. Sadly the engineers were behind French and Italian competence levels in those aspects. Imagine how the Douvrin line of motors would've been if designed/made in the UK?

Re the 1.6HDi I consider an "unforgivable" error. Rushed to market and then the customers left to bear the repair costs in many cases, plus being saddled with the perpetual uncertainty of a blighted engine.
