Problems after timing belt snapped.

Post by Hebby »

Well Sunday just gone I was off out with the misses for a lovely drive when no power loud buzzing from engine and car crawls to a stop.

Couldn't see anything obvious so called green flag and guy said we had a snapped timing belt. Estimated cost £500+

Towed home chatted to a mate and was told I could repair myself and he would advise me what to do [-o< so I did and had the head sent to an engine place to have all the valves replaced as 5 where bent so opted to have em all replaced. Also had a skim along with all gaskets and a new set of bolts for a grand sum of..... £65 :)

Everything is now built back up and running but my problem is this...

Idling like a bag poo doesn't want to tick over and wants to die then once starts to run ok-ish there's no power and using loads of fuel :(

Checked everything
Inlet manifold
New plugs ( turned black after first day indicating running rich )
New coil pack
Second hand Injectors
Second hand injector rail
Second hand injector plugs
Checked all connectors, wires and pipes.

Checked for air leaks and couldn't find any have now been checking for the past 3 days to no avail.

It's like it's misfiring but isn't.

Plugged into fault code reader and came up with 12 faults mostly from when belt snapped. But did get one about the throttle position sensor ( p0123 ) and have read these have the same symptoms when fail.

Any ideas as I'm at a loss

You don't say what car and engine this is. Always a help in diagnosing problems.

Have you double checked that the cam belt timing is correct?

so are you saying all the above came to £65 quid????,

just a skim on a diesel head is usually £45 quid,

then valve are a minimum of around £7ish each if your luck £14ish if not,

then if there are any damaged valve guides,

then if the engine place shimmed it all up for you, this is around £60 quid as its a long process,

then there the head gasket and gasket kit with valve stem seals,

so in all it sounds like someone aint done what they say they'v done ( engine place maybe ???? )

Engine place is a well reputable place to have the work done

it was a friend who's dad is best friends with the owner of the engine place :-D

As for the car its a C3 2002 1.4 petrol.

And yes the timing is right as i had a mechanic friend check it over before building back up and starting the car up.

Have you checked your valve lash hot?

TBH if the valve clearances are correct (valve lash in down under speak!), they will be OK hot. For it to be something else would be an immense coincidence, given it was running fine right up to the moment the belt went..... I'd still be inclined to re-check the timing. Does this engine use a crank pulley with a rubber damper in it, and is it timed via this pulley? They are known to fail, putting the timing out even when it appears to be right.

Crank timing done with a pin in the flywheel on the 1.4
Did you check the valve clearances when you re fitted the head ?
