Electrics or fuel????

Post by Willow1983 »

Hi people, I hope u can help me, I have a 306 xsi s reg. for just over a week my car seems to be misfiring when I try to rev it. But if you keep the revs up its fine. Also does this low revs when driving, After this it seems to pull well. I've also noticed when starting it will fire up as normal ( meaning a couple of turns and it fires) but it seems like it doesn't reach idle smoothly. Hope this makes sense
Not 100% it's missing or whether it's just spluttering bcoz it's fuel related
I've changed the plugs so far and was going to change the coil pack next but thought I would ask on here first. Thanks for any advice

Mmm, haven't run a petrol car for about 30 years they didn't have coil packs then but your fault sounds typically weak spark or weak mixture so coil packs could be the problem. Presumably it has fuel injection, a weak mixture will give the same symptoms. Does it only do it when cold or all the time?

Hi, thanks for reply. It does it all the time, I've unplugged each injector at a time and it has made the car run different so I guess the injectors are ok. Would this also mean it's sparking ok?? Someone mentioned at work could it be the head gasket? It doesn't use oil and I've topped the water up once in the last 6 months. No signs on oil or water cap.
Thanks

Odd as it may sound, make sure your battery lead clamps are in good order, also check your charging voltage.

You may also have a fuel supply issue, pumps usually last well but sometimes the power supply to them can be affected by fusebox problems, harness corrosion or an ageing tachymetric relay.
