Oil change

Post by KennyW »

Good morning everybody,

Interesting observation.

I've just done my regular oil change but replaced 10/40 oil semi synthetic with 05/30 w oil fully synthetic and the rattling tappets I had, have gone :!:

It was always about 2000 -3000 rpm.

Never had a problem with them on an Hdi but the 2.1 XMs used to clatter after I had done an oil change and then get quieter with mileage.

If i am correct, the lower the numbers the thicker the oil?? So intheory the newer oil should help silence the little rattles??
I remember putting in ep75 in my old gti box as the synchro was showing signs 4th - 3rd when hot, sorted it but cold mornings were. Interesting for the first few miles! ;-)

Nope, other way around - lower numbers = thinnner. The first number is the equivalent straight grade it won't go thicker than when it's cold, and the second the grade it wont go thinner than when it's hot.
