Basically the 2.0 8V unit used up to about 2005 doesn't. The 1.6 (although not some early 90 BHP units), 2.0 16V, 2.2 units all use DPFs. So you'll probably find that most (if not all) 407s have one, whereas many 406s will not. If you do a decent mileage, then there shouldn't be too much to worry about - might well need a clean out at around 100k.

I would agree with Richard, the 2.0. 8 valve Hdi is the one to have, much simpler and easier to work on than the others and more reliable plus considerably better fuel consumption than the 2.2 - which does have a DPF.

Hi Richard and Peter, thanks for your replies, I don't seem to be able to find adverts stating whether the cars are 8v or 16v just 90hp or 110hp, I appreciate that if they were all 8v up to 2004/5 they should all be 8v but advertisers either don't know or know the reason that I ask, and I don't know if the 90hp is 8v and the 110hp is 16v any thoughts on that fellars!

I think you will only get the 8 valve in the 406 if its a 2.0. they lasted until the end of production, I don't think the 407 used the 8 valve. The 110hp one is better, more power, lower emissions and cheaper tax, the only thing is it has a DMF as does my 406 and as far as I know its still original at 226k miles, as is the clutch.

thanks again Pete, I am not a fan of DMF's either but I suppose its a case of compromising at the end of the day, it seems to me that things go one foot forward and two back, maybe I remember when cars were uncomplicated, will have to do a bit more research or try and find a good Moggie Minor

2.0 90 or 110 are both 8V, and the 'original' PSA common rail engine. No DPFs on these. 2.0 138 BHP is the later 16V unit (with DPF). The early 2.2 unit (136BHP) is DPF (and not very good, and best avoided); there are later 2.2 units with more power - all are DPF equipped.

Thanks Richard, I shall look for a 2L 90 or 110 hp 406, I didn't really want a Moggie Minor, by the way, I live in France so will be buying a French car, hope this doesn't make any difference, its not easy trying to get the information you guys have given me in France, despite the cars being made here.
Cheers mate Bill

On the 407, the X-LINE and ZENITH models don't have DPFs.
