Renault 4 Manifold ID help please!

Unread post by Northern_Mike »

Hi All,

I'm trying to find out which model of Renault 4 (or possibly 5, but I think 4 due to the exhaust layout) this inlet manifold is off. I need to find a decent carburettor for it. It's currently on a 1108cc engine.

We *think* it's from a 1983 R4 GTL - but the single choke Zeniths on those only have two fixing bolts, not the four that this manifold has. That's an adaptor plate for the twin-choke carb it has on it.

It's currently running with an unidentifiable, worn out, Nikki Carb on it.. I want to replace it with something reliable.

cheers

Mike

Good lord James, that looks exactly like my crappy old carb. I've emailed the seller the numbers we found yesterday.

If all else fails, and it physically fits, I could swap the jets over...

There are these ones as well;

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Nikki-twin-ch ... 1c44adb995" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/nikki-carbure ... 4d21d90c5a" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

but I think the first one I posted may be better (price wise, certainly). Failing these, now you have a possible starting point to look for others.

The second one is different, but the first one looks identical. I'd rather sack the Nikki off altogether to be honest. but if needs be, I will buy one and swap the jets.

I could put a carb off a later 1108cc R5 on, but that means a new manifold. A new manifold for the 5 is thicker cast, so I need new studs in the head (or the spare head to have new studs), then I need a new exhaust system as the 5 exhaust exists towards the rear of the head, not the front like mine... and a new rocker cover, as the 5 throttle linkage operates longitudinally rather than transverse and all the routing is wrong... grumble grumble.

Yeah, the numbers aren't the same on that carb. I don't know what that means, as even the DRK club chap can't tell whether my manifold is genuine Renault or a Nikki with an adaptor plate on it..

I'm just going to clean the old carb up and stick it back on, not sure about the cables though..

I think new cores wouldn't be a bad idea. They do look a bit tatty. The problem is getting the right lengths.

It needs a total new choke cable kit anyway, and a new knob. The current one is down by the floor on the drivers side, and I can't actually reach it without taking my belt off, which isn't too helpful.

That's the wrong carb, and a fantasy price!

Is more like it, chinese copy or not, it can't be worse than what's on there at the moment.
