Citroen c5 extreme inside edge front tyre wear

Unread post by Neil TM »

Hello,

Why why might I be experiencingCitroen c5 extreme inside edge front tyre wear on both sides?

Citroen C5 1.6HdI VTR Estate, late 2006.

Severe inside edge tyre wear going through cords very quickly.

Tracking OK when checked for last set of tyres, 24,000 miles ago. No
subsequent damage, kerbing etc.

Play in NS (left) hub assembly, none in OS (right). Play appears to be
occuring at inboard end of drive shaft, and no detectable play in
steering arm.

No noise or vibration suggestive of CV joint wear.

Any suggestions please?

If you have got 24000 miles out of a set of front tyres there's nothing wrong with that.

More a Q of getting away with 24,000 miles really. The thing is the last tyres wore the inside edge, but not this severely, so this suggests worsening joint wear rather than tracking which tested OK last time despite the wear. Anyway, wear, and quite severe wear that amounts to a steering effect is present on the NS only, its just that I don't understand why the in/out movement of the drive shaft is happening and what to do about it, when there are none of the usual signs of CV wear.

The main suspension arm bushes appear sound, and show no accompanying movement that accounts for the drive shaft inboard end movement.

All 4 of the tyres that were on my c5 when I bought it were unevenly worn, fronts on inside and rears on outside. I have no idea how long they had been on. The car needed a rear radius arm bearing and two track rod ends for the mot. IIRC my last c5 also wore it's tyres inside edge on the front and outside of rear.

Solved it. Bottom balljoint attaching the lower wishbone is the culprit. Sorry for wasting time on here, feel a bit silly for not spotting it considering how much it is slopping about!

It was NOT a waste of time. You asked for help and you helped yourself, and you told others on the forum how you did it.

Thank you for your reply with the solution 8-)
You can be sure that it will help some member or guest in future.

I had similar problem with that lower ball joint (not the wish bone but the other one) and it caused the steering wheel to be turned on one side very slightly about 2-3 degrees. I got the part replaced very soon that there were no visible problems with tire wear yet.
